I recommend snow shoes for snow.
Failing that, I find strapping an old pair of Slazanger tennis racquets to the bottom of your feet is a pretty good substitute. A bit Heath Robinson (that's Rube Goldberg for you 'mericuns) but if needs must.
On ice, you are pretty much fucked no matter what material the sole of your shoe is made of.
The reasons I think that leather is a poor material for the sole of shoe is mainly for mechanical reasons. After a short time the leather compacts and loses what little compliance it had and no longer offers much, if any shock absorbing properties. The act of walking on hard surfaces, pavements and the like imparts considerable dynamic loading (shock loading) into the foot if this is not dissipated by means of a sole constructed from a shock absorbing material it will be dissipated through the various joints/bones in your lower body. It's a terrible choice of material for the sole of a shoe.
I will wager that most members on this fine board who partake of longish strolls whilst wearing their finest leather soled footwear suffer from occasional bouts of foot pain.
