Joey Ive just found something on geometry and symmetry in scales and rhythm that may interest you.. this also helps a lot with colour pallettes and musical scales..and suggest why somethings may be obvious..and some less so ie asymmetrical...interesting because theyre not at rest

I had a really good bookmark that is broken now which went even further into it...it explains why we need resolution...because the way our music system is set up in asymmetrical form...

I love reading this thread. I have a pretty good grasp on music theory and studied it in high school and college briefly, but this stuff is so far over my head. Still, it's pretty cool to try to follow along. Carry on!

The idea is to make it simple to liberate yourself..if you find that little nugget on truth thats holds together all infinite possibilities you are truly free to create

Sorry the major scales are symmetrical the minor are asymmetrical hence the unbalancing nature of the minor scale..

I'm really enjoying the bump for this thread.
For someone who frequently works with musicians my knowledge of musical theory is exceptionally poor,
anything I do musically tends to be '3 chords and shouting' or really abstract electronic stuff that's more about playing with sound than having a tune.

Having said that I've actually preformed in two big-band versions of 'Electronic Sonata for Soul's Loved By Nature' by Mr Russell.
In one version - at the RNCM in Manchester in 2006 for a student Phd project -  I'm credited as 'Tapes, shortwave radio and electronic treatments ( non-musician )' in the concert programme.
The other was a workshop and performance with saxophonist Andy Shepard leading the project ( he'd worked with Russell up to his death ), again not doing anything particularly musical but doing 'tape manipulation' for the electronic interludes in the piece.

Its a slightly different thing you have to draw them out around a circle to see the lines of symmetry.

Have a look at that link and you'll see what they mean...difficult to see some things as geometric but anything cyclic will of course give a geometric shape when mapped over time
