Re: The jeans question ...

Very old thread I know... Bu t yesterday I stumbled across them:

http://www.hm.com/gb/product/04758?article=04758-A

I know, H&M - and I don't know where thy would be made... but if they are made in Turkey, they could probably come out of the same fabrication as some Levi's lines. That said I have two very similar pair of jeans at home, one standard Levi's 511 (not too overwhelming) and one slim fitting H&M (both made in Turkey) - the H&M being the much better jeans, higher rise, better denim...

Re: The jeans question ...

I only wear lee 101's (B Z or rider) these days and I live in jeans

I have had the albam slim leg and although they are a great denim, the rise was more like a hipster very tight around the groin area too

The lvc 505 Turkish zips, bought 2 pairs and returned them both (oi polloi) wouldn't wash me scooters in them, rubbish cut

You pays yer money
I mean supermarkets do jeans for £3 but they look like 3 quid jeans

Re: The jeans question ...

After weeks of thoughtful deliberation with Worried Man, I took the plunge on these Chinese R424's, size 33:

http://tuckshopsundrysupplies.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=50

I plan to go to work on the back pockets with a seam ripper as soon as they arrive!

Do any of the resident denim nerds have any experience with these?

I'm currently wearing cheapo Wranglers (936) sized 34x30... comfortable, if a touch big in the waist, which measures approx. 17 3/8".

I should be a 32 but I'm more like a 33 these days.

The above measure 34" in the waist with a solid 14" front/back rise.

The website indicates that they shouldn't shrink more than an inch at most, but will stretch back. Hopefully this doesn't affect the rise.

These will be my first ever "shrink-to-fit" pair of jeans. I've done my best to avoid sinking into this complicated and perplexing world of trendy overpriced import hipster denim until now, so I really hope they turn out OK.

The hem width looks identical to my cheapo Wranglers, which are 14.75oz (slightly heavier) but everything else about the fit of the Red Clouds looks better to me. I'm basically paying for a decent looking wash and an extra inch or more in rise, as I don't wear my jeans often or hard enough to fade out the smurfy blue dye.

I'm so glad you bought them.  Now, if you like them, I'll have an expert opinion, which will help me make up my own mind.  I've revisited that site a few times and just couldn't really build up the confidence to pull the trigger.

Re: The jeans question ...

And you know, I was feeling the same way about the pocket stitching, but now looking at it again, it's really not that bad.  I'd probably still rip it out, but it could really be worse.  It looks pretty traditional, or like something that would have actually been stitched on some early-mid twentieth century denim.

Re: The jeans question ...

Y'know I was actually thinking about tearing the top arcs out first and then seeing how it looks... basically an upside-down Levi's pattern, right? I just don't like the contrasting color thread but I'm sure after some hard wear, it'd look okay. I'm not partial to any unnecessary ornamentation though I pulled up this photo of someone's jeans that look like they've been put through the ringer and there's a definite improvement on the pockets. I never wear jeans enough to get 'em looking this rough though I suppose I could just scrape the shit out of the stitching: https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xla1/v/t1.0-9/12391082_1685172941727084_9092203469196861011_n.jpg?oh=abeb3eca8abffff9c575bf31342e1fb4&oe=5740C446

I'll post my review as soon as they turn up. I'm a little confused/concerned by the advertised rise (size 33) on this pre-washed pair though: http://www.abfits.com/straight/red-cloud-r424

They appear to be identical models with completely different measurements. I'm sure I'll be getting what I paid for though... just weird that they seem to be inconsistent, but then that would seem almost consistent for jean makers.

Btw, I bought Jen the "New Normas" from Freddie's as well, so I'm hoping this is finally the last stop on our mutual denim quest!

Re: The jeans question ...

Man, I'm kind of worried... I wrote to Red Cloud and they claim the rise is only 11.75" in which case, I never would've purchased them. I wrote to Tuckshop asking for confirmation. I really hope I don't have to deal with a return to Singaore now! Maybe this is a sign that I should've stuck with my $30 Wranglers. I can't seem to catch a break when it comes to the cut of jeans that we've discussed.

Re: The jeans question ...

Final update: confirmed it's a total bust and I've asked to cancel my order. I should know better than to buy trendy Asian jeans.

I'm gonna just splurge on those Iron Hearts when they're back in stock. The specs look better to me anyhow, even if the price doesn't.

If that doesn't work out, I'm back to my $30 Wranglers.

PS: measurements on the above website are totally bogus. 14" rise is not correct. These are typical low-rise fashion jeans. sad

Waiting for cancellation and refund.

Edit again: cancelled and refunded! The cut and design might suck but they're no slouches in the cust. service dept. I got a response to my email in under 5 mins. Glad I dodged that bullet!

Re: The jeans question ...

Oli if you are going down the Japanese made route give Kojima Genes a look,
the RNB-102W 15OZ is probably closest to what you are looking for ( no back pocket embroidery and probably half the price of the equivalent IronHeart ).

'Son of a Stag' don't have measurements on the site ( but a quick email should get you all the details)

Re: The jeans question ...

I've said it before, the 551z have a great rise and they were selling them for $70 at one point on the Levis site, don't get why you didn't try a pair out - or at least head down market street and try a pair?

Mine are still sitting unworn in the wardrobe - Need to sort the inseam - trip to regents street soon.

^ T's not wrong there, if the 551z are around deffo worth a look.
It's about to be discontinued ( hence the clearance price on a number of sites) so grab a pair soon.

Re: The jeans question ...

Thanks Acton, those do look good! Any idea where I can find actual specs?

re. Levi's, I've honestly not had many good experiences with the brand in a very long time. My friend works at the Levi's store though, so I'll ask him to pull down a pair of the 551z's and see what the fuss is all about. I'm not really sold on the numbers though: 12" rise on sz. 33 is acceptable but not all that enticing to me. Can't really say why, but I'm just kind of down on Levi's. There were these two long-haired bearded cats that used to work/design for Levi's and broke off on their own a few years ago to start a local denim company called Jack/Knife, which apparently sunk recently. Not that it matters to me, but they didn't have such good things to say about their current product. I'm just going by experience, but I've not been content with anything that I've tried at Levi's in the past few years.

Re: The jeans question ...

My own cord 551s aren't higher than 11,5" either? But they are old ones from the 90s... So the LVCs are probably another rise... (The 90s were all about a high rise though. Really) smile

Re: The jeans question ...

Have you tried Mr Freedom denim?

As Leer says not a lot of denim is that high in the rise Dept. I'm not saying the LVC 551z will be the answer, just figured worth a try - they are a better cut than the 505. If you had the bucks I would say hit the Dawson kids up, but that's big money.

Re: The jeans question ...

Oli , it might be worth giving Paul at JS a shout as they are now stocking Kojima Genes.

the other option that may be worth a look is Pike Brothers , again a little pricey but not nosebleed.
The 63 model while not a whopping front rise do sit on the waist nicely ( quite a high back rise more like Lee Riders than classic 501s)
