I always thought dogtooth was bigger than houndstooth but that they were otherwise the same. A friend has been arguing that there is not difference at all, that they are synonymous. I thought I had seen a discussion on here that could illuminate us but I can't find it. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject?

Isn't it the same, no?
The list from cutter and tailor magazine is fine, I think:

I thought the gun check was houndstooth, and the dog tooth is obviously the one pictured. And then puppytooth was the smallest of all.
You raise a good question. I always thought they were basically the same.
I always thought Houndstooth was bigger than Dogtooth. eg. Puppy, dog, hound. I think that womens dresses & coats in a really big tooth pattern are called oversized Houndtooth aren't they?
Some interesting and inconclusive answers! I hadn't consciously clocked that gun club check was a smaller variant of the same pattern, I think because I usually see it in colours that contrast less. I will continue to keep my eyes peeled for sources that illuminate this question. Thanks for all your thoughts!

I think that pretty much, categorically, supplies you with your answer Max!
Try that cutter and tailor forum, i think its called that, i'm sure you'd find someone with enough knowledge to give you a clearer answer.
Tread carefully, those guys are militant.
