I tried several makes in the $150 $200 range and found that they were quite flimsy and insubstantial. Eventually I settled on these Sanders bucks as they are built like a proper shoe and I reckon they will last a lot longer.
The Weejun recommended some ages ago on his blog, that I think looked ok and I don't think are in the list above. It's in a post about some NOS classics he got.
I'd never pay over £100 quid for bucks....used and abused in the same way deserts are. Everyday footwear.
My friend swears by Sanders , I take Bass.
I found these for myself in the middle of winter. Every time the weather is even a little warm, I have to fight the urge to put them on. But I'm waiting until May...
They are NOS from Barrie, LTD. and cost $5.49 at a Goodwill store near my home.

I'm getting some of the Sanders come pay day, nice summer shoes.
The Sanders bucks I have are dead smooth on the bottom and I dread rain when I'm wearing them as wet pavements are lethal. The grooved soles on those Orvis one are a 'major contribution to road safety' as Sir Robert Mark used to say.
I have the discontinued Allen Edmonds they are quite comfortable.
I have some Mcnairy's, vintage LL Bean, some NOS Brooks, vintage Dexters, and a pair of Cole-Haan. The McNairy's are my least favourite as the shape is somewhat blob-like and too wide for my feet. They are made well however. All the others I listed are solid examples if you can find them. I happened upon a pair of Allen Edmonds NOS Orleans at a thrift shop last year but sadly they were too big for me, but if you can find a pair of those in your size I wouldn't hesitate. Cole-Haans and AE's also have a grooved vibram sole unit which grips and wears far better than the usual smooth rubber.

I concur. Which is why I wear these:
I think I picked them up for about £30 in a sale somewhere (might have been Oi Polloi). Very comfy with the crepe sole and they're beginning to age nicely. They're not strictly bucks, of course, but I think the rust-coloured stitching just hints at the classic buck nicely.

870 BUCKS?!?
You really shouldn't have to pay over $150 US to get a quality pair. I always pick up Bass as well. There's a good Bass outlet nearby where you can score them for about $60 on a good day.

Best bucks are The Bucks of Oranmore.
I have versions by Joe Burke and Raymond Roland, but Martin Byrnes' is the best.
Reel showstoppers.

yup. huge markup in japan. alden made these for blackbird and they're "normal" priced.
$437 alden
$550 leffot (made in northamptonshire)
$165 mulholland
no more in off-white, i guess:
the stitching on these looks a lot like on those barrie ltds, but the sole is different:
$170 (100 on sale) neil m.
$600 alfred sargent
$160 s/double
how long do bass last, assuming daily wear in the spring and summer? are they bright white, or ivory/off-white? i'm thinking of getting a pair while i hunt for barrie ltd, allen edmond, or ralph lauren.

I have the Bass bucks in both dirty and white and they are quite all right. I wore the dirty pair today in fact. Very comfortable, and they have actually held up well. Not a sleek shoe. But they seem to be right on the cheap and cheerful spirit of the buck. I imagine they are suede rather than true nubuck.
I tried a pair of the Walkovers - very narrow. Beautiful suede, but somewhat crude (even compared to the Bass). Has anyone seen the Brazilian O'Connell's bucks in the flesh?
