Great stuff Bop - I'll follow with interest.

It seems that in one of the illustrations you are subconsciously drowning Worried Man. Would you like to talk about that?

Re: Ivy Illustration

Unfortunately I dont have the space, money or technical ability to paint. I work digitally on a Samsung Note 4 normally on the Sketchbook Pro app, which used to be a lot better till they relaunched it.. sad I find suits how I work.. ie quickly and experimentally, and a lot of the time sparadicly!

Im envious of anyone who can actually paint..I think itd drive me mad not having the control over the colours

The colours themselves have led me to recognise a similar theme in Hockey's work and also how Paul Smith uses colour..the difference being mines come straight out of my own take on theory..where I feel they are just naturally gifted and are probably just choosing colours as they feel which I admire greatly too..good thing is though I can teach anyone my method which means there is hope for anyone wanting to understand colour better..

All I ever wanted to do was make Jazz visible.

Re: Ivy Illustration

Good stuff Bop! I like WM in the aquarium too, also the dude being bathed in moonlight and the still life's in the room with chairs and gun on the table.

My wife's friend who's an artist does all his work initially digitally on Corel software and then if he think's its a good one, he proceeds with the actual physical painting.

I must admit to being a naive art fan and I've been tempted to set-up a digital studio in the house too, I like the whole Rev. Howard Finster vibe - great stuff. Visual artists tend to have a long life span, as opposed to poets who must inevitably die young.

I like the quirkiness of these images

my fave is the chap looking at the moon

do you do drawing as a profession or is it a hobby?

Re: Ivy Illustration

It's just a hobby PT..Ive talked with people on how to get work and you have to show your work fulfilling briefs which is something I'll have a go at in the future and see how it goes.. the colour theory though is something Im trying to create into an app with a couple of friends..Im more interested in that side of things..these pictures were out of a need to show the theory in context, and obviously I enjoy doing them.

VERY cool stuff Bop.  The palettes are very appealing throughout, and there's just a very cohesive style to your art.  Can you comment on the pervasive sloped shoulders on your subjects?

Re: Ivy Illustration

enjoyed your illustrations Bop ... you could easily design for a revived Hang Ten company ... I like the Cowichan sweater you designed too ....

Re: Ivy Illustration

That was a copy of one in Free and Easy... seems to be a classic design...i think its even the same as the one the Dude wears in Big Lebowski..but in a different colour.

And yes the Hang Ten influence is strong in me!

Re: Ivy Illustration

I like the blue and red you chose for your Cowichan .... I don't have any of this stuff but it's got the Ivy skiwear repurposed into the hippie vibe I have a soft spot for .... by now they've been well hipsterized too but so what ....

your t-shirt designs are particularly great and I would buy them ..... strong ribbed neck, easy fit, all-cotton in a nice 6 to 7 ounce weight, pocket, some with tails, some notched, occasional Henley ... some better surf shops sell similar things but your nice crispy colors are better.

Re: Ivy Illustration

I dig it a lot, Bop - especially the blue cat in the eggplant coloured jacket beside the cat in the cloud coloured jacket. I also second what others have said about going the traditional route... you could always use ink and paint for the outlines and then fill in the colour digitally. You've got a quirky kind of elemntary style that seems to contrast with the very sterile, unorganic medium of digital. It's a bit too clean 'n pristine for the free-flowing style and unaffected sloppy look that you're conjuring with the clothes. I'd use inks, scan, and digitally colour. Really nice work though!

Re: Ivy Illustration

I hope that didn't sound like an overly negative asshole remark. I meant to write that I dig your style a lot and would love to see it hand drawn rather than digitally painted because I think it would enhance your overall aesthetic.

Re: Ivy Illustration

I think I'd like to go all out with the painted approach a lot of my work is technically areas of colour I build up then add the detail afterwards..a bit like you might if you were painting where as classically a cartoonist/comic artist would create a line image and then someone else would colour it...I think it's defo something to explore. If I could actually show how I work I guess itd make more sense.. also I dont think you can beat a good oil painting..!

Re: Ivy Illustration

Of course, digital art lacks texture, but so does our time. Perhaps then, it is the perfect medium to get the message of our time across?
