Re: The Ivy colour wheel

Warm undertone, muted color saturation, and mid-to-low contrast. After that it's all about complementary colors.

It's really more of an Ivy color palette than a color wheel. The traditional colors drive me nuts, because my skintone doesn't work with a lot of them.

I've bored myself and others enough, be interesting to hear what others thought. Also, I'd believe this to be Andy if a jpeg hadn't been embedded.

yup, complementary as in matching, not exactly in the technical sense.

Re: The Ivy colour wheel

Just thought I'd paste it.

Complementary
Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors (example: red and green).

The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This color scheme must be managed well so it is not jarring.

Complementary colors are tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out.

Complementary colors are really bad for text.

Re: The Ivy colour wheel

For me when I was picking out colours for my designs I found using any saturated colours really lead to a preppy look, but muted and pastel was the way forward for Ivy. I think the problem is with the sober colours, it can aged a young guy, I know people get up in arms about me saying that, but it's true, you want a bit of vibrancy, but you can get that by choosing colours that aren't too muted, or bright and saturated. I also found using white, or lighter neutrals can help brighten an outfit, without using a bright colour.

Re: The Ivy colour wheel

Another thing i noticed that works nicely, is when you take complimentary colours and darken one and desaturate the other. So say a navy with a beige, or dark green with a pink. I think this is because they are contrasting when used at full saturation and brightness, but when you actually tone down that jarring quality by decreasing the value of the saturation, especially on which ever one you choose to be the lighter of the two, you get a really understated contrast. that lends itself well to ivy. Imo

Re: The Ivy colour wheel

And on a side note to what beat said, i don't claim to be the best or now the most, i just do what i do, if people like it or are interested that's great, if they don't well that's life. And when it comes to people being great, or being round greatness, my dad is an award winning graphic designer of 40 years, and one of my best mates again in his sixties, is an amazing illustrator and artist who has done work for the jimi hendrix estate as well as many other things, so i know what it takes to be the best, and i agree i may never get there. But i enjoy the learning and the process, so like i said, take it or leave it. I'll still be doing what i'm doing.

Re: The Ivy colour wheel

Ooey, I got carried away last month and ordered myself the grape Coloured chinos from LE online . Like the others in that same model they fit just right . Not only, that I took a,chance and got them hemmed at 29.5. Not too long to stack not too short to look floating or high water. Anyway they look nice, it's more a subdued grape/lilac/purple and not too bright. However I've had a time working out what goes best, what works for being subdued stealth dressing and what works to give a bit of pop without looking try hard.

So far it's black suede chukkas/DBs down bottom, or black leather chukkas, suede is a better softer more interesting look, and up top a white BD with large ish blue guarded yellow stripes. Also a very pale yellow OCBD with blue guarded white stripes. But now the problem! What jacket. ??????

I only have a limited number , I've a brown cord unstructured slouchy but I don't think the brown works withnthe grape colour. Brown moleskin, more structured hacking style, same problem with brown and also too non slouchy.  Various tweeds don't seem to be the right texture? A blue cotton unlined blouson G4 type throw on and a beige /khaki the same?? Blue too close to work.beige too light.

Other purple grape lined G4 type , too close.

Black G4 type too harsh??

The only thing that really works is a red slightly padded shower car coat sort of that stops at high thigh length coat, but then it seems thers too many showey elements.

I'm no Ivyist but just interested in where the colour charts lead you on this?

There are other sport coats and leather jacket.

Any thoughts ooey?? Even justa bit of theory and speculation as to colour areas t try.

Re: The Ivy colour wheel

Now you sound like my dad. Sorry Beat, I'll get the Letraset out! I spent a lot of time reading up on colour theory at college and uni. Johannes Itten, Joesph Albers, and Matisse's work, and the Pointillists. I didn't just acquire a computer and a colour-wheel. I spent a childhood surrounded by french-curves and pantone markers.

I like what Oo Bop has to say on these subjects. He may not be a graphic designer but what he says seems to make a great deal of sense... to me at least. Maybe that's because I'm not a graphic designer, I don't know.

Anyway, it must be nice to be able to lord it over people safe in the knowledge that you don't actually have to contribute anything yourself. I would love to read your thoughts on all this Beat. As the kids say on this here interwebz, 'Tits or GTFO'.
