LeRoy Grannis, Surf Photography of the 60s and 70's

Hi all,

Sorry if I have not properly introduced myself. I have only posted a couple of times, but came across this book over the weekend and thought it might interest some of the posters here on Talk Ivy.

Fantastic photography, and some great west coast Ivy. Lovely button downs, aloha popovers and tapered slacks...not to mention the bikini laden girls.

It truly is a great book! I came across it after re-watching Riding Giants, which also has some great footage from the late 50's/ early 60's. Surf-Ivy is the look this summer...

I really need to see Riding Giants, a friend of mine actually recommended it to me a while back but never got round to seeing it.

Just can't beat that laid back, ivy influenced look for the warm weather...in my personal opinion of course.

Yes Nathan! Great. It's a different animal to the college boy Madras and chinos Summer look, isn't it? Thanks and welcome to the board.

FC- I've noticed elements of the look creeping into this years high street looks. Vans and the like are back in fashion, Aloha shirts and short shorts (on the street!?) are everywhere. Not much looks like quality and the look is on the whole a superficial 60's surf style. No real detail. I guess that's good as I wear the look on sunny days but with a little more authenticity... I like to think.

I'm loving your blog these days btw. A very entertaining read. You put a lot of other blogs to shame.

The high street always ruins everyone's fun! I had been looking whimsically to summer since last year in childish anticipation , building a surf-inspired wardrobe to unleash upon my coastal roost and I will be damned if Sir P Green will stop me!!

I see Aloha shirts and the like pop up every year but like you said these examples are poorly made substitutes..Wearing quality items in the correct laid back 'fashion' by those in the know will always triumph in the face of mass produced adversity.

That's very nice of you to say..I see it as a Flashman novel, hard facts inter-tangled with soft stupidity!

Hi Liam, thanks for the welcome. I agree with your observation that the look is considerably different from the college boy (madras and chino) look...amazes me how the style transformed from the East to West coast.

Speaking of "surf-ivy", my go-to casual jacket these days has been a black watch, pendleton board shirt; popped over an oxford, it's a nice fair-weather alternative to the heavier shirt-jac.

Anyone else partial to a bit of board shirt, over the shirt action?

I dig board shirts! My particular favourite is the special edition Beach Boys number.

Don. I have been looking out for a nice boardshirt  but I haven't found one that fits the bill just yet. It's an essential part of that look for me.

Blackwatch sounds perfect!

I love Pendleton stuff!

Three different kinds basically, the heavy shirt jackets, a little like a mackinaw coat, I got one from Yuca in a great green check, slightly different from this one:

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDAxWDY0MA==/$%28KGrHqR,!lIE-lH3f%28Y1BPsNjdq3wQ~~60_3.JPG

but basically the same design...

... then I've got this style:

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u193/MelodyLB/Pictures%20September%202011/PendletonShirt7.jpg

some sort of shirt/ blazer hybrid, no idea how it's called...

and a few of their board shirts:

http://s7d3.scene7.com/is/image/PendletonWoolenMills/?$product_detail$=&hei=373&wid=280&op_sharpen=1&size=280.0,373.0&layer=1&src=PendletonWoolenMills/50000_PBB&size=280.0,373.0

But all of them with that little collar loop...

and similar ones...

----------

plus some of their button downs, whatever they're called... Sir or so...

I was also tempted to get one of these barn coats:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PENDLETON-Mens- … 58939a4b2c

Maybe...

Re: LeRoy Grannis, Surf Photography of the 60s and 70's

God I love Pendleton porn.

The sack-type blazer is called a '49er' I think, it's more used for the womans version of the jac but I think it's indiscriminate term. I've also got a green check mackinaw type jacket, like the one in the pic but minus the bottom pockets; maybe we've got the same jac, Hank? I'll add it to the pendleton porn thread sometime.
Also, that barn jacket looks a beauty & incredibly warm

I'm black-watch mad; there's just something about it. Really suits the board shirt too.
If you're looking for one there's a new one floating about ebay and they occasionally show up second hand but are never labelled right so it might take a bit of looking. There's also that risk of whether it's actually a medium or just an XXL that's been hideously shrunk; I've been burned many times.

I've got a spare, black watch board shirt knocking about that's unfortunately a bit too big for me. I'm on holiday in a weeks time and plan to do a bit wardrobe raid-out, so I'll pop it for cheap on the sale thread; would suit a 39-42" chest depending on how it's worn

All sounds lovely Don. I'm a 36/37 chest though so Pendelton that fits for me is a rare beast.

Bop is a fan of a 49er. He has two beautiful vintage styles that I think he wears with 5 pockets and sneakers. I know he is or was sympathetic to the west coast style. I think he just wears monks robes now. Blackwatch monks robes, naturally.

I have a 36s Pendelton that is too short on my arms somewhere. I will get you a photo sent.

I typically go for something like this now, when I'm having a serious Peyote session up in the foot hills.

Just bought this book today, great book and a bargain at £9.99 from waterstones. I've bought similar sized photo books that cost 3 times that. Love the double page picture of all the busses and vans parked up on the beach and there are some great little snippets of Ivy in a few of the pics.

Just thought of the ultimate Ivy/Drug tie in TV show, Peyote Place, I'll leave it to George to write.
