Re: Peak Lapels - The Good the Bad and the Ugly

The ole SBPL is my favourite, in fact all my suits and sports coats are now cut in this style. I find it flattering for my build.

I've always found the 'they're everywhere now' argument strange. Notch lapels are everywhere and people still get them made up bespoke. Maybe one reason for this is a concern with being seen as fashionable and the fear that that expensive bespoke suit will date quickly. A needless fear if the suit is well cut.

SBPL look especially good in chalk stripes. Very rakish.

I like 3 piece suits in both notch and peak lapel varieties. Not keen on those double breasted waistcoats though even though they can look good.

If you get a 3 piece don't wear a belt, there is nothing worse than seeing a belt pop out from under a waistcoat. Shows you don''t known what you're doing. Get them with side adjusters, with provision for braces or with loops and side adjusters but use the side adjusters in 3 piece mode. A good tailor will know this and tell you. I would get side adjusters personally as braces arouse to much curiosity if you are wearing the suit sans waistcoat and take your jacket off.

The pictures are all so iGented out with bracelets, facetious lapel decorations, ugly silk things in pockets, 8-inch tie dimples etc., it's hard to even notice the peak lapels. The chambray shirt sucks the biggest one.

The photos are a sobering reminder that good, well designed lapels are not a given...and neither are shirt collars.
