Re: Movie's that inspire the look.

It would be interesting to find out about this with a therapist, but I think one of my strongest personal influences is the TV series Daktari. When I was a boy in the very early 70s, TV meant only two channels and US series from the mid sixties actually were quite new.

Daktari is far from being ivy, but it had the dark blue denim jeans, tons of khakis, slim 5 pockets, BDs (on women) etc.

In my ivy renainssance some years back, it was "Love with the proper stranger" and the usual suspects which already were mentioned or surely will be soon: "Charade", "Breakfast at Sir Winston Churchills Flem spoon.'s", "Bullitt", Delon as Rilpley and what not. Not to forget the few moments and glimpses in modern films - the collar roll on that white BD of one of Jason Bourne's opponents. The peacoat in "Igby".

Or moments in old, long forgotten films like Tony Randall in  "Marrakesh"etc etc.

I think I am the type who is influenced from a lot of directions, a point which is viewn quite critically on the other side of the Atlantic. I am only going to say "review of Ify Look".

Just to get a repp..

I've never been able to sit through Rosemary's Baby, tedious and slow moving, all those long-shots signifying.....nothing.

That's horror movies for you - not designed for the more intelligent of us.  At the same time, RB is a beautiful portrait of NY at the end of its ivy heyday.

Re: Movie's that inspire the look.

Jack Lemmon in Days of Wine and Roses, 1962. The film is good too.

These are mentioned often here:
William Holden in Sabrina, 1954.
Sweet Smell of Success, 1957.

I can't remember the name of the film but for collegiate style there's a pretty decent 80s/90s film set in the 50s? The plot was maybe about an underprivileged Jewish kid who enters an elite school. The costume department did a good job, plenty of Shetland wool and tweed in earth tones. Oatmeal sweater galore! All the collegesploitation movies blend into a mush in my head and I can't remember which is which. Anyone?

Yeah  sports fan,   I can’t remember the name of that one, I have seen it though .I think a young Brendan Fraser is the tough Jewish kid from the wrong side of the tracks..

Ah yes, "School Ties" matches the plot but a quick google image search shows more repp ties and blazers than tweed. Still, it must be that one.

Re: Movie's that inspire the look.

^That's a great way to go.....

I must admit, most of my inspiration these days is from Etsy and ebay crawling. Maybe some blogs too, and here of course, although I do find we are suffering a glut of high-rise pants on Ivy League Style for Today. Perhaps I should start posting on there with photos, as I do lead the way in right on the belly button chinos.

Edit: I meant a dearth, not a glut!

No doubt Hep. More and more I realise it's the rise that you can't bluff.

Indeed, it is the rise that sorts the men from the boys, the wheat from the chaff, the professionals from the gentleman amateurs.

The high-rise is difficult to find, you have to seek it out as an adventurer, it will not merely land on your lap without extreme effort. Like the 2" knitted tie in black, you have to go out of your way to procure from non-ordinary sources and sellers.

Of course, I'd rather have a bowl of Coco Pops.

This is off topic perhaps... but I remember this ad too being a big influence on my small boys easily warped mind.

^That's from way back, maybe 78 or even 77. A long time ago.

This was so unbelievably hip in the 80s:

If you mean the Kia Ora ad... They played it in cinemas I think when I was a kid Andy. Must have had a long old run. I remember seeing it when I went to see Jurassic Park. That must have been 93 or 94.

Re: Movie's that inspire the look.

Well it was the Kelburne Cinema. I doubt they changed the ads very often. That was the last small independent cinema in my home town. The owners son burnt it down for insurance money when his old man died. 2 screens and a tuck shop of sheer wonderment. I'd have some Smarties (gruesome greenies) and an Um Bongo. Yum. Good times.
