Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet - Blue Mosque

I'm not really into Jazz (apart from the Jazz everyone likes... Miles, Ella etc) but this a sample on a hiphop tune I like.

Any similar recommendations from you experts?

^ if you dig 'blue mosque' try this compilation ( and volume2) by Giles Peterson.
More British made jazz from that period ( i think blue mosque might be on it smile )

Not quite the jazz I expect is the standard here but I've been listening to these two for hours:

Re: What Jazz are you listening too? or WJAYLT for short.

^ Cool stuff... Bassist on that is George Joyner, you can hear him absolute crush it on a long version of "Blue 'N Boogie" with George Coleman, Booker Little, Frank Strozier et. al., highly recommend that whole album - then he changed his name is Jamil Nasser and played with Frank Gant in Ahmad Jamal's post-Israel Crosby/Vernell Fournier trio, mid-1960s into the 1970s... Awesome and underrated bassist...

Never really got on board with Donald Byrd to be honest... He's fine but I can never really hear what makes him stand out, as opposed to a Lee Morgan or a Freddie Hubbard, though I do love his stuff with Pepper Adams, 10/10 for those sides...

I love the 1950s and 1960s Blue Notes, so crisp and the tunes and arrangements are usually cleaner and fresher BUT nothing beats a Prestige record for that 3am session feel, you can just hear the smoke in the room out in Hackensack...

Playing as I type this:

Interesting that Tyree Glenn is on that album.

I feel like that era is where Donald Byrd made his mark more than the hard bop stuff, even... Unlike Freddie Hubbard who had already made great straightahead and then later was like "My b guys I didn't mean to make all that fusion"

One of my favorites. Great drums... The third track "Effi" is sick.

Places and spaces and Stepping into tomorrow are great btw! They're kind of the only 70's fusion albums I really enjoy.

That version of Effi is really cool, thanks for reminding me of it - I also like the Bobby Hutcherson version, recorded first but not released until 1980...

Same. Love anything with Jim Hall, but that album is especially excellent.
