I expect most of you have already seen the sweet but rather nutty Japanese on YouTube discussing the style of Mr.Bill Evans. It's not (absolutely) without interest (although I'm not sure about the choice of shirts; wasn't one by Hugo Boss?). I still dig the early, 'monochrome' look (disliked by the average female of the time it seems but hey-ho, what do they know - or care?). In fact, it isn't quite that, is it? It's more subtle: shadings, shadings everywhere.

Yes. That early look is great I think. Disliked by females then and probably more so now. But as you say……
His look back then is a little bit shabby. Tired. In a great way. But there’s elements that come across as quite clipped and precise. Woody Allen meets Dave Brubeck.

I suppose, at certain times, Cal Tjader didn't dress so very differently. There was a splendid portrait of him for sale on Ebay recently. Jacket, shirt, tie, glasses, hair. The seller wanted too high a shipping cost, needless to say, otherwise that would have joined my prized photograph (framed) of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. (Annie looks stunning: the way she sounds on 'Twisted').

Just listening to/watching the trio perform 'Waltz For Debby' on YouTube. In spite of what the enthusiastic Japanese gentleman has to say, Evans is wearing a striped, probably repp, tie with his shirt (spread collar, I think, can't be quite sure). In black and white but a knockout. That tune is fast becoming one of my favourites.

Interesting. I was raised by a father who remained devoted to New Orleans, New York, Chicago and Dixieland his entire life, though listened to the MJQ, Mingus, Davis, Coltrane, Monk etc. too. Very catholic in his tastes; no 'mouldy fygge'. 'Louis' - as he invariably referred to Armstrong - was his Number One Guy. I try to follow his example and keep an open mind.

On the cover of 'A Simple Matter Of Conviction', just what is Bill Evans wearing? Not the 'monochrome' rig suggested by our Japanese enthusiast on YouTube, that's for certain. Is that sweater shining? Under the lights? Or could it be the fabric?
Elsewhere, on another cover, he's wearing a fairly chunky crew neck.
More to Bill than meets the eye.
