Why would you bother with a popover when the placket is that long?
That's how all shirts used to be made before the jacket opening. So no wonder the design as stayed with us, look at that old 50's Popover TJ sold.
Yeah the first Brooks BD was a popover with a long placket, I think a British company invented the jacket fronted shirt... in the 1910's
(actually not sure who it was now, TM Lewin maybe, some company who still trades anyway)
