^That was a tremendous era from around the mid-50s to before the Vietnam war started in earnest, with the US State Department's sponsor of jazz tours as a cultural projection of soft power and the superiority of American art. A wonderful influence on the likes of Ellington and Brubeck, whose music invigorated by the exposure to other musical forms and cultures.
Now, a lot of those places visited, like the Westernizing Kabul are the proverbial holes and degenerating into the dark ages. Sad, very sad.

^Ha! I used that photo on a poster for the band a couple of years ago - the guy dancing looks pretty spangled - which is the sort of people we try to attract. Their critical faculties are severly attenuated, which means they're less likely to throw things.
