Getting back to who's American, I'm half American. My father was a Dutchman, but he was killed in the unpleasantness in the Western Pacific in December 1941. However, my mother was about as American as they make 'em. They say, "America is a nation of immigrants," but no-one in her pedigree migrated to the USA after the Declaration of Independence. She was even a descendant of the (real) Hiawatha through Joseph Brant, the famous Mohawk chieftain, or so family lore claims. Dolley Madison was a first cousin (a number of times removed) as was her sister Lucy, who married George Washington's nephew. Not family, but a good friend thereof, was Abe Lincoln.
