The Ivy Sandwich ...

Once I teased a certain lowly clothes chatter message board with the notion of the Trad sandwich, but only after I had asked them what was the most Trad letter of the alphabet...

Today I revisit my love of sandwiches, their heritage and their glory without any satirical intent.

What is the most Ivy sandwich ?

Many English supermarkets are now doing 'New Yorker' sandwiches... They break Kosher by mixing meat & dairy, but I have a dispensation from my Rabbi...

Sandwiches are Summer and Summer is here.

What do you go for ?

And what do you drink with it ?

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

Surely the Dagwood is the ultimate American sandwich? Soulfood like Mama used to make. So good they made a dance and record about it.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

I'm a simple sandwich guy. My top 3:

1. Peanut butter. Crunchy style. Wheat, or recently, spelt bread. Paired with seltzer water.

3. Fried egg. Sometimes with bits of hash browns thrown in. Paired with coffee or tea.

4. Sliced steak. Mozzarella and bbq sauce. NON-KOSHER. Paired with iced tea.

I think I would be okay with having a peanut butter sandwich and tomato soup everyday. Given that I recently bought 100 bespoke suits, custom made shirts, ties, and pairs of shoes to win plaudits on the internet, it is fortunate that I am a man of modest needs in all things.

The most trad sandwich is cucumber. There is little room for argument on that.

The most American sandwich is the club, if we are excluding a burger from the sandwich category.

When many people think of England they think roast beef. But not me. I think of the prawn sarnie. Shudder. They were every where and I don't know why.

I have peanut butter sandwiches for most breakfasts with a glass of 0% fat milk or tea.

I was at the beach earlier and had a cheese and onion sandwich, normally I would have fish and chips or "kibbling" that's bite size portions of fried fish to you or I.

I'm fond of that classic American dog food, Underwood's Deviled Ham. smile

Sell's Liver Pate also makes a good sandwich, although I don't quite understand the point when you can just have liverwurst.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

I was talking to a friend from Boston last night who tells me pulled pork on rye with coleslaw is his 'sammiche' of the moment. Sounds good to me.

He also insists it's perfectly acceptable to refer to a burger of any sort as a sandwich. Anyone back that?

My friend Stanshall will be sad to learn that Manny's Deli has closed. However Aldo's barbers still goes strong. I now have no idea of where to eat and wander from joint to joint like a sandwich whore...
