Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

/\  Me too, on white bread ... PBJ with grape jelly, cold milk served in a heavy frosted glass from the freezer ... it's a very Ivy sandwich, I made one every night in the dining hall, along with a giant green salad, toasted cheese sandwich, yogurt with granola and raisins, a bowl of cereal (Kellogg's Corn Flakes), with ice cream, orange juice, and chocolate milk ... sometimes I'd eat the white rice with a bit of soy sauce ..... but the PBJ was a staunch ally

the rest of the stuff was inedible as hell except for roast prime rib of beef for Christmas Dinner and taco nights

and ham and cheese omelets cooked to order at one special small college's dining hall ......

all our significant good food was bought at off-campus pizza parlors, sub shops, hamburger joints, and coffee shops

one of our genuine dorm delights was the Stouffer's French Bread Pizza bought at the Co-Op cooked in the GE toast' n broil Toast-R-Oven ... (French bread pizza was born at Cornell)

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

My dad's idea of cooking was Hamburger Helper so I basically grew up on Stouffer's frozen turkey dinners.

Today I had the real deal at Lefty O'Doul's (est. 1958) ~ hand carved roast turkey sandwich on thick cut rye with mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy. Total damage: $7.

It was pretty good but I prefer their corned beef and cabbage, prime rib and lamb shank specials.

/\  today was a cheeseburger at LeTub on the Intracoastal Waterway on A1A, with a Coke with lemon, for the extra acid ... perfect monster burger, sitting on the dock, looking for dolphins and manatees ... beautiful day ... lot of chop on the water ..... that is all I needed for the day ..... serious food coma followed .....

Good technique too, removal of tomato to avoid tectonic slide.

Haha.  That sandwich will register on more than the Richter scale once consumed.  Jesus!

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

It is strong, around 10% ABV. I almost frighten myself to admit this, but I am accustomed to that strength, and in fact, it's about all I drink. I find these days that anything under 8% feels thin and simple. I believe my liver agrees.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

Speaking of indulgent beer, I recently tried a Ballast Point Victory at Sea, which is a porter infused with coffee and vanilla.  Bold and rich and delicious and has to be at least 10% by volume.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

Ha. Yes, well, one does have to drink a little less of the strong stuff, in one sitting. Or one should.

Re: The Ivy Sandwich ...

I remember eating somewhere in Florida when I was a kid that had feral cats practically climbing up your leg for scraps.  They were just huddled around staring.
