'ponies in cardigans' is one of my girlfriend's favourites. However, those looking for real heat should search 'bunny on the phone'.

O' Connells buy directly from Larence Odie, rebrands them and then marks up the price.
It's a shame, as it's the reason why the LO stock shop never has much stock.  Best shetlands I've ever tried though.

Those Drakes look fantastic, captain! I wonder who they buy from...
Looks a bit like Jamieson's to me. Hopefully Oi Polloi stocks some non-shaggy ones this year.

They are pretty expensive, $165 and then shipping cost at $45 is too much for my already strained budget.

LL Bean do cheap and ok Shetlands.  But they're made in Chnia rather than Scotland.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

I can recommend Arthur Shepherd a traditional menswear shop in Cambridge.

http://www.arthurshepherd.co.uk/stock.php

They stock tradional shetlands by Harley of Scotland, the quality and fit are good. The knit isn't quite as heavy as Odie's which I find can be too hot to wear in all but the coldest weather, this makes them more usable in my opinion.  Shepherds keep a good of range colours and they are extremely helpful when you ring up. Last time I bought from them the guy who served me took a picture on his phone and emailed it to me so I could see the colour shade. From memory they are about £65.

Some of the colours are shown on this US website but just to keep things interesting Harley seem to use different colour names when they market them in the UK!

Re: I am after a new Shetland

The Laurence Odie is a beautiful Shetland but I find it to run a little small so take that into account when you order one ... anybody else notice this?  No quibble whatsoever with the quality of the sweater, just was surprised at the size, returned mine to O'Connell's and might try again later.  I take a 43, ordered a 44, it was tight on me, will check out the next size up, the thing is worth trying to get right.  If in doubt, size up.

Mmmmm....The joy of finding somewhere one can pop into it and try on first..
I wouldn't fanny around ordering a shetland online tbh...nowt worse than having to send shit back and still be unsure of what size to go for!
Even instore you can try 3 versions of the same knit & I'd fair wager they'd all fit differently...
JS did have a new shipment in of stuff when I last popped by a few weeks back but it was still sweltering and so I wasnae gonna go near trying them out ya ken?!?

Re: I am after a new Shetland

Aye, them Harley's are a rare beastie; half-way between a shetland & a normal sweater. Pure beauts though. Might just go with them this year.

Wee shetland break-through this afternoon. Received a Harwick shetland. It's identical to a brooks I have from a few years back. Everything from the yarn to the features and hems, to the fit. Must be were brooks are/were sourcing their shetlands from.

Here's a link for a large one if anyone's interested;

Re: I am after a new Shetland

I'm going to pop into town tomorrow. I may get lucky but probably not. I know one place who sell Alan Paine and a couple of places who do fairisle. The Shetland we all know and love though don't seem to pop up. I guess they just aren't a popular pattern in Scotchland...

Will report back.

Yeah- I have been thinking about a Shetland and all I see recommended online is that Spirit of Shetland site as well...it seems lots of people are unhappy with Press' Scooby Doo, or whatever it's called...

Calling Senorservo, please on your next trip to J. Press check out the current crop of Shaggy Dogs and give us your fair assessment, these have always been good sweaters, but I have read about the chests being tight and the arms long from time to time ...

Press sweaters have also been made by Laurence Odie in the past and the current ones may also be, if that's the case the wool and color quality will probably be up there, the issues people were having were with the fit.  As Thee Captain noted, it's hard to guess the fit buying sight unseen.  And some people noted they felt the sweater felt warmer than others to wear.  I read a few old threads last year and these subjects were all raised there, consensus was strongly for Odie sweaters both shaggy like Press and flat like O'Connell's but if the fit is wrong then the loveliness of the wool and the good job on the colors doesn't matter.

The Andover Shop has beautiful Shetland sweaters too, by the way.

If you telephone Lawrence Odie and ask for the factory shop there's a nice lady called Rosemary who will advise you what size to go for.

I do love looking at the weird colors of Shetland sweaters at O'Connell's, those kinds of Shetlands can inject some good color into gray winters, but I almost always end up getting blue, gray, blue-green, and camel heather lovats.  Scratch almost.  Always.

The thing with these Shetlands is to have them in many colors for different occasions like Otter but that's not easy at today's prices.
