Unexpected Ivy in movies

I apologize if this thread or something like it exists elsewhere, but I happened upon two films this weekend-both terrible-but with standout sweaters.

First, Sinister. Pretty lousy horror movie. Starts out okay then dives headlong into "c'mon, son!" The main character, it turns out, is not Ethan Hawke but Ethan Hawke's amazing chunky knit cardigan which he wears for 99.9% of the movie. Honeycombing, shawl collar, elbow patches! This sweater has it all. There's a Facebook page dedicated to it and many Reddit posts asking where to buy it (the answer remains a mystery though it does look machine made).

http://filmgarb.com/wp-content/uploads/film_sinister_2012_ellisonoswalt_ethanhawke_sweaters_shawlneckcableknitcardigan.jpg

Then I re-vistsed Final Sacrifice. Forgot that the kid in it runs around the entire film in what appears to be a slim, red, v-neck shetland.

http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcb1t1g0jY1rhd46ao1_400.gif

It's similar to this kid's here from Making the Grade (http://www.ivy-style.com/making-the-gra … -pant.html)

It should also be noted that Rawdowser's uniform is white jeans, light denim jacket, man bracelets and hockey hair. APC will sell you that outfit in 2013 for $900.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

/\ great topic, keep them coming ... good to have a thread to pop these sightings into ... when the movie is modern and isn't completely Ivy or only has bits of Ivy here and there you don't want to make a big deal out of it but sometimes the things you see in them are noteworthy .........

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

Re-watched Stephen King's It tonight. Still pants-crappingly terrifying in parts. Did you know they used to show this on the ABC Family channel sometimes?! Enjoy therapy, kids. When the grownups in the film reconvene they are all dressed in the worst 1990 had to offer (see John Ritter's leather vest, spread collar denim shirt and visible black undershirt), except for Tim Reid's character. He's the town librarian so they made him all derp-derp stuffy and fussy, yet he's the only one dressed like a sensible adult.

This is the best picture I could find after searching through three-pages of horrifying clown images. Cream colored button down, v-neck red cashmere jumper, and what looks like a soft-shouldered, grey flannel sports coat (with elbow patches no less!) If I was about to fight / orgy a hellbeast out of existence, damn straight I'm wearing something comfortable I can mooooove in.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

Re-watched one of my all time favorite 90's movies, Class Act, last night. It's all the fun of the House Party films without having to adhere to an ongoing narrative. This is also where Chris "Kid" Reid cut his hair, never to grow it back. This is known as the JFK moment for my generation.

In any event, Kid totally reps the ivy look with an ocbd, Levis, and Weejuns ("nice pennies") which are constantly made fun of by Play. When it comes time for Play to dress like Kid (hard to explain, watch the movie) - Play shines on Kid's wardrobe (from JC Penny, allegedly) and says he'll get his own. We next see him in an ocbd trying to impress a girl by saying "you like my shirt? You know Brooks Brothers? The Brothers Brooks?" Play seems to know his stuff ,though the majority of his wardrobe for the film appears to be made out of plastic. Four stars. Plus a Pauly Shore cameo.

I see Kid is lined up as the geek goody two shoes. A bit like how Carlton was against Will on FP from around the same time.. maybe it was a black kid prep school thing going on in American culture what would be the reverse of a wigger?

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

I can't get an image for this, but recently I rewatched the Black Gestapo (for the 1st time in almost 20 years). One of the white gangsters wears a beautiful sack blazer and flannels, with a classic blue OCBD. I was pleased to see that although he was a racist, psychotic rapist, he had some decent clothes.

some sort of banal legitimacy

Interestingly enough, Hillary from FP is in Class Act playing a brainiac. She was cute. Why wasn't she in more movies?

I don't think there was a prep fetishization in the black community back then (outside of Boyz II Men)

This was right before Tommy Hilfiger made "street prep" a thing so movie nerds still wore OCBD's and cool kids dressed like Don Johnson in Miami Vice. In two years Method Man would be photographed wearing a rugby shirt and bucket hat and the lines have been blurred ever since.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

I watched two movies today The Butler and Saving Mr Banks.
Both had some sartorial interest the civil rights section from the early sixties
in the Butler (lots of button downs and Cardigans)

Saving Mr Banks was mostly set in 1962 LA nice scenes in the Hotel that Mrs Travers
was staying in nice shots of Madras Jackets.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

After years of being obsessed with Jim Hutton's wardrobe in 'Walk Don't Run' ('student architect Ivy' for want of a better description),
re-watching it today and I noticed that nearly all the male Japanese characters and extras are rocking variations on a 'natural shoulder' theme.
It's set during the '64 Tokyo Olympics and some of the 'scene setting' footage at the start shows loads of of Japanese gentlemen looking amazingly sharp.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

Not totally unexpected, as it is set in 1960s Mississippi and features lots of FBI agents, but I watched Mississippi Burning the other day for the first time since I was a youngster.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

I also watched The Shining on Christmas Day with my family. Not exactly Ivy, but there is some cool Americana on show.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

Super Bowl weekend! What better way to get your adrenaline pumped for a game that turned out to contain very little action than a Steven Seagal marathon followed by some Godzilla movies?! Through the drinking and watching arms get broken and buildings get stomped on, I spotted some gentlemen reppin' a few Ivy items:

Above the Law -  Seagal wears his tuxedo shirt and mom jeans with a black blazer while Ron Dean silently rules the film in his Barracuda G9 jacket (sorry for the bad screengrab. He's only wearing that jacket in every scene of the movie yet Google image search has nothing but images of guy's hands being chopped off):

http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/4/4b/ABL_215.jpg/400px-ABL_215.jpg

Godzilla vs. Destroyah - What was supposed to be the final Toho Godzilla film (before Godzilla 2000 and the highly anticipated 2014 reboot) sees a group of G-Force scientists trying to stop Godzilla from going atomic and taking out everyone. Two cool cats (guy in glasses and guy in labcoat to the right) solve the problem wearing BB OCBD's and hacking jackets (not pictured in the screenshot but trust me):

I rewatched City of the Dead the other night and while the movie's no great shakes, there's lots of choice New England collegiate style on screen.

Watched Contact because we've literally watched everything else on Netflix. But, lo and behold, one of the research assistants distinguishes himself from his hippie wastoid in tie-dye'd colleague with a Brooks Brothers fun shirt, tortoiseshell glasses, and a pipe. Why not?

Tony Soprano's father-in-law wears a nice button down on his birthday. Although i really like this shirt, it probably stands out because everyone in the series is dressed so poorly.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

This one caught me off guard. It was a recommended watch from a colleague for some work I'm doing.

Rudy - 1993

Was pleasantly surprised by the outfits on show. Lots of Americana, plenty of button-downs and some good sportswear as expected. An unexpected appearance by Vince Vaughn too.

Would love to go and see a Notre Dame game!

Not a movie but there are some quite good collar rolls in the US comedy Arrested Development.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

the justly revered Office Space, which was mainly filmed in Austin, Texas, is a showcase for the short-sleeved buttondown collar shirt, which is prominently worn by Peter, Michael Bolton, and Drew of "O" Face infamy, the last of whom sports a nice light-green model as he introduces a phrase of comic genius to the lexicon.  In addition to his standard blue shirt, Peter can also be seen wearing a superb ss ocbd in a green and blue large paisley print.  A short-sleeved ocbd is also worn at times by the unfortunate Tom Smykowski character, the guy whose big idea was the "Jump to Conclusions" mat.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

Chevy Chase in Modern Problems ... early in this bad movie of which I've only seen five minutes Chevy is seen wearing a good oatmeal-colored Shetland crewneck over a university striped ocbd shirt ... great except his cords are somewhat flarey, which is too bad but reminds me that in the '70s even a lot of true preps wore boot-cuts and worse with their ocbds ... Disco Bob I'm talking about you!:

Good spotting Stan.  Love Office Space.  Probably about time for me to revisit it too.  "Back up in your ass with a resurrection!"
