It's life Jim, but not as we know it.
^ Montreal Jew, dated my grandmother in summer camp!
Btw, 7.75" is the perfect trouser taper imo.
The wisdom is in the middle.
The James Stewart's trousers are a real monstrosity (also the coat is ugly),and the Talon trousers in the advertisment above are too much tapered in my opinion (is also a matter of comfort).
Sure, between the two my choise is Talon silhouette for the life!
But a less tapered pants is better, and William Holden's trousers in Sabrina have the best widht for a trouser'suit.
Is classic.
Yes, I like the trousers in the Talon advert, too, and I'm not a fan of the baggy pants on Stewart's suit. My point was that our perception is governed by what's around us, by fashion, and today's fashion quickly makes us forget yesterday's fashion. We're used to the slim fit look, an exaggerated slim fit look these days, and so we tend to think of this very narrow cut as normal now for about 10 years, just like James Stewart's contemporaries in 1938 were used to a very full cut.
Avoiding the extremes is key to a classic look. Of course, what we regard as extreme and what we think of as moderate is also depending on current fashion trends. Thus it is helpful to get a historical perspective, too.
You make a good point about comfort.
Actually, I think that trousers (as opposed to jackets and shirts) can be slightly snug and short, as long as they're still comfortable. Tight and stiff and uncomfortable always looks wrong.
Keep in mind that back in the 50s 60s the average height of USA males was around 5'7" to 5'7.5"
Now it is around 5'9.5"
All other width/weight measurements - thighs etc have increased substantially.
Thus the average silhouette is rather different.
In essence with sketches - which show an exaggerated idealised body - not a real body - we are dealing with a different silhouette.
Squashing a modern day person into the same measurements or imagined silhouette - doesn't work as a simply scaled set of measurements.
Thats why vintage has an edge over reproductions - the reproduction or modern versions don't often take the trouble to look at the "LOOK" thoroughly and reinterpret it properly.
Measurements alone aren't enough - an artist and enthusiasts eye is also needed - a rare combination.
Yeah but I'm talking about ratios.
bop - i didn't see your post. I'm not argueing with anyone here. Well unless I am.
Heppie - I thought I was sort of making that point too.
This is true but that classic cut is also found in BB makers. From a time when men were apparently slimmer.
This is true fxh. If the idea is to balance the person's characteristics which most of time it is. But you can also dress to emphasise those features. Like WM does... but then he is a dork
I agree lets face it WM is a total fuckin' idiot.
I think hes on some drug that makes you get trousers with higher and higher rise each month and higher and higher flood prepared trousers cuffs. Soon his trousers will be at his armpits and cuffs at his knees. I think its probably Dr Pepper , Twinkies and Funyuns* . I keep watching COPS thinking I'll see him one night being chased over that back fence of his, tasered, cuffed and tossed in the can.
* my Ms is obsessed with trying to get some Funyuns . She says - you know a lot of weirdos on the net - get some. I must admit they sound fun.
If I get arrested, it will be for kicking your Aussie ass, FXH. I've got to keep my pants short to keep from getting your blood and other stuff on my pants when I shove my size 8 El Salvador Weejun up your ass.
