Yeah.  Fair enough.

If you look at the Dartmouth '68 Anthropology class photo you can see the perfect illustration of the huge shift in style that was taking place. Front row far left and far right.
Same age, same class subject but they look a century apart...

Re: Yearbook Finds: The Best of Collegiate and School Ivy

so far the highlights for me have been the Red Wing 875s, the Bean camp mocs and Sperry canvas deck shoes from the '61-'64 batch as well as the astounding camp moc ankle chukkas on the guy sitting on the circular bench under the big tree in the campus life '66 shot ....

... I like '67's hiking boots and '68's desert boots too .....

quite an enjoyable bunch of shots so thank you very much Sidewinder, this is great stuff ....

By 1972 things in the Anthropology class are getting seriously groovy, man. Assorted Furry Freak brothers, a David Crosby lookalike, and one of the Ogden's Nut Gone Small Faces centre, first row.
Holding out at the back, far left is a trad whilst all around him goes to pot (pun obviously intended).

I see one normal guy in the whole amazing shot, which is greatness all around.  So funny to see those long shirt collars.  What a disaster those things were.  Lot of good companies stumbled in the '70s on account of those long collar points ..... sick stuff .... especially the hairstyles ...

the guy in the sheepskin/sherpa and possibly the kid in the ski jacket in the front right are normal but the rest of them are heads.  There are a couple of ubernerds in there too but these guys on the whole are still in that Woodstock to Watkins Glen pocket ... I don't want to say they're all Deadheads and read too much into it but come on.  They are.  Again the boots make a strong showing as do the few buttondowns, which really can save the day.

But nothing in this picture or anywhere else tops the guy in the black flat Spanish hat, porn 'stache, shit-eating Cheshire Cat grin, huge-collared wide-open black shirt and necklace ... he looks like he's channeling equal parts Zorro and John Lennon's insane get-up from the Hey Jude album.

It will always be puzzling to me that so many here decided to go for the new long collars to be hip.  Pernicious development.

He's the David Crosby fan I mentioned. Can't remember which album it was where he wore that spanish hat, but almost certainly influenced by Lennon from the 'Spaniard in the Works' cover...(Crosby, I mean)

As an historical piece this period 1968 onwards is certainly interesting ,but does it belong here and is it Ivy?

I suppose if people are highlighting the bits of the style that persisted through the period it makes sense.

Woody Allen through the 70s is an interesting thing to follow quite groovy at the start at least in some interviews and very prep by the end of it. Dont write off the decade!

By 1972 I would have been listening to the Grateful Dead myself -  without dressing like them. British alternatives were dire.

If it had been the UK they would all have Army surplus greatcoats, rugby shirts and loonpants.

Look on the bright side, nobody is wearing stack heel shoes.

Things got hairy quick too - long hair, big sideburns, mustaches, beards.

Peter Hitchens on the far left. He did not take drugs then and he does not now.

Further along the same row in the check shirt is Steve Perryman.   http://i3.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article … 821147.jpg

Re: Yearbook Finds: The Best of Collegiate and School Ivy

Crosby's hat predates Lennon's from that insane ensemble he sported on Hey Jude, but as I said Crosby probably just saw the Lennon pic from 'Spaniard in the Works'?

AC, I know it's veering away from Ivy with these latter pics but really I was just illustrating how quickly everything changed with images from one class across a decade. I promise I won't go any further (tho' it would be interesting to see the swing back into more trad looks as the 70s morphs into the 80s...)
