Tab Collar Shirts

I'm really itching to get myself a proper tab collar this year, but the pricing goes well above my head and I don't really trust BB too much at this point. My only alternative is to convert a lower price dress shirt's collar into this style. Does anyone have any good examples for me to draw inspiration from, be it from existing garments or media or possibly conversions of your own?

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

I've been searching for the same. Zach's got a '70s J.Press in his Etsy shop with a pen mark on the shoulder that otherwise is exactly what I'm looking for, albeit the sleeves come up an inch short. I'm looking for that same collar shape and build on a modern shirt and I just don't think that any exist right now.

These might be worth a shot. Points look short and collars look soft. Also do eyelet pin collars. http://www.pincollarshirts.co.uk/collections/tab-collar-shirts

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

Might be worth trying a couple if only £35 in the sale?

Damn, I should stay away from this forum. There is too much temptation. A rounded tab collar has been on my mind since ages.

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

I have flirted with these collars and found it pays to go up a size to avoid the choking effect when the tab is fastened.

Overall I remain unconvinced about tab / pin collars. It's a definite 'dress statement', something which I generally like to avoid. You are limited to narrow ties, which as the Hepcat once remarked, 'make you look like the office junior'. Also the tab or pin make the tie jut out giving a trussed up effect which is the antithesis of the relaxed ivy vibe I seek. There are also the mod connotations to consider.

Just my personal opinions of course.

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

Billax - nice - I'm going to get one again at sometime - years ago a I had a few - thees something about them I like and others do too. I like tab collars too - used to have lots of them. I'm thinking I might get custom - I have a image of loooong points flopping down and being drawn in with lots left over. I have kept all my various screw on bell-bars, clip ons and safety pins. Waiting for the day.

That one above has sewn holes for the bar?

You're a pinhall wizard, Billax! Great look.

The myriad clip-on styles of collar bar are great to play around with on plain collar shirts. I'm rarely without one if I wear a suit socially.

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

At the MOMENT (Must resist to buy, must resist to buy...), I own exactly two tab collar shirts. One of them (OC BB) gets worn. Seldom, but I wear it.  I should add that for business, I do not strive for ivy and my business suits aren't ivy. I agree that it is a more dressy look, but sometimes I like it. Yes, they look best with narrow (or slim) ties, but none of my ties is wider than 6/7 cms anyway.  I have been playing with the thought of having my one and only Ainsley collar BB shirt converted  to a tab collar shirt.

I am not sure what an office junior is, but in Germany you more likely get mistaken for being a member of a certain liberal party.

A rounded tab collar has been on my mind for about 8 years. Sure, it has mod connotations, but what's wrong about that? wink Even if I came along in full cliche gear, the majority of people wouldn't know what it's all about. Mod really is a "very British phenomenon" in popular culture.

I also like the idea of those pin hall shirts which Billax gives such an masterful example of. I even own a few of those clip -on bars, but I have to admit I don't have had yet the balls to wear them. They are very uncommon in Germany.

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

Thanks, Billax, for the link to your article. I enjoyed it very much and find it very useful. For example, I learned that those thingies I own are called  "compression bars".

Are those "pin through" pins safety pins? They remind me of them, although German safety pins look a bit different. I am beginning to like the idea of having a dress outfit with a subtle "punk" element, although that's not where it's coming from.

I concur with one of the previous posts - real pins should be best used with soft collars. I once tested a pin on on an old shirt with fused collar to see how it looked. The hole stayed in the collar. Cheapo shirt, sure, but still...

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

P.S: I own a round club collar tab shirt - similar to the ones posted on here by Zach - mine is a "Charles Tyrwhitt". Wore it when I got married, together with a brit styled suit - not too Ivy, but I think such a shirt works well with a nice sack suit, too... But they are quite "dressy"...

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

Too large for me (16/34) but this is a great looking deadstock Hathaway:

I'd be all over it if it were a size 15.

Re: Tab Collar Shirts

I never understood the purpose of a short sleeved tab collar:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mens-L-Vtg-50s-60s-SEARS-Tapered-Sanforized-S-s-Striped-Work-Shop-Shirt-Unworn-/290924355517

Who wears a tie formally with tightly cinched collar on a half-sleeve summer shirt?
