I remember that, I also remember you standing your ground. I have exactly the same arguement with my friend about Buggys Malone

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

I went out with the lads last night, and when we started trashing our local shopping centre whilst chasing a guy in a leather jacket, I insisted we chanted 'We are the modernists' etc. To be honest it just wasn't the same.

For that reason, I'm out.

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

I was thinking this this morning and with art at least I think parallels between the idea of the classic's world sense of beauty and the modernist abstract/expressive one. Mainly due to the underlying principles of form. The link becomes broken with post modernisim thou

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

I think JS is best understood when you visit the shop and don't look at the clothes. There is a great sense of 50s modernism in there. Like the London School with a wardrobe attached. I think it was this being filtered down to street level that gave us mods in the late 50s. The catalyst whether they knew about it or not was modernisim. But the weak link is the meeting between East coast conservative dress and modernism. They were not tied in their conception

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

Can't open any of the links as my PC seems to have developed some sort of good taste filter. Always happy to view any recent footage of Weller and see how he's faring in his ongoing metamorphosis into Keef Richards ..... Got a lot of time for 'Keith' Rowland too - just can't abide looking at him these days as his face looks like it's worn out about three bodies. As for that bellend Hewitt - could never abide the sycophantic coat tail hanger anyway - got the impression that Weller only adopted the Mr Bean lookalike as it made him look even cooler when they were seen together. I guess that just leaves us with professional arse Robert Elms - how we laughed at his 'northern scum' crack all those years ago ..... did you know that he used to go out with Sade? He doesn't like to talk about it though.

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

I think that's also why so many of us who came to adopt traditional American style as an extention of our affinity towards a modernist aesthetic, are so turned off by the post "boom years" reconditioning of the ivy look into that 70's-80's preppy revisionist fashion (so often associated with contrasting ideals of embellished classism) that attempts to reevaluate and restate the principles of "the ivy league look".

Also, I think it's worth noting for the purpose of context that conservatism in the UK during mid century (which ironically is far more akin to the post-ivy culture of trad/prep) was world's apart from conservative America, where Modernism had been incoporated in art and ideals since the late 1800's.
