That's why it's apples and oranges when speaking of UK "modernists" dressing conservative... conservative mid century America WAS modern! It was entrenched within and reflected throughout every branch of culture; music, art, clothes, design, etc.

But I thought Mod was a Britsh thing. Like the Who and The Small Faces. They were marooned on Eel Pie Island and started this whole Lord of the Flies scene.  Were they not racist?

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

Just look at the evolution of American tailoring from the Victorian to Edwarian period to post-WWI... you gain a better appreciation and perspective on just how modern the Brooks mold was! It's kind of ironic how contemporary fashions reflect upon this style as "conservative" while it's painfully clear just much of a regression American (outsourced) readywear has taken in contrast.

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

Just to raise my point again, ivy clothes were acquired by modernists. The clothes themselves I'm not sure can be considered of the same lineage mainly because the look of the 40s being widely different from the end of the 50s. I'd consider pop modernism really taking old by the mid late 50s. And the style really being defined mid level dept stores and youth brands than classic American clothiers.

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

Errm, in the video that was linked in the original post, I think, Kevin Rowland was the only one who was talking about "conservative clothes" or who mentioned the word "conservative".

Otherwise, I wouldn't know who was talking about Mod and/or Modernism as "conservative"...

I'll search for that post by Oliver...

In theory modernism should have been a continuing evolving movement. But it isn't. Its possible to see modernism as not having progressed past the 60s. And being stuck magnificently there. Post modernism is something else.

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

Sorry, Mr formby, maybe I'm kinda slow, but before your post #32 in this thread I haven't found anyone mentioning the word "conservative", except that it was mentioned by Kevin Rowland in that trailer.

Hence my conclusion that your post was in reference to Mr Rowland's remarks...

Re: The Neat Offensive - JS doc.

Still, wearing conservative clothes is not the same as being conservative.
