^To truly drive a renaissance the article of clothing must not only satisfy an emotional need (nostalgia, desire for craftsmanship, etc.), but also deliver at least a perceived practical value.

Ivy hits the nail on the head right there, for me.  It can satisfy my nostalgic streak and there are plenty of good vintage pieces to be had, but it also serves as completely practical everyday wear.  I can wear some casual paisley shirt or print shirts when not at work, and then for work I can don a OCBD and khakis and fly right under the radar.  The spectrum of ivy gives you the leeway to do the "retro" thing, but it can also operate in a modern context just as easily.
