My best friend for much of my youth was the biggest "prep" imaginable. Lived in a huge house in a golf community that also hosted polo matches and he was a star tennis player. Looking back on it, I don't see how I could have rubbed elbows with someone of such vile status.
That last part's a joke. But my non-prep friends detested my affinity for the guy, and it was a point of ongoing needling.
I dunno guys. Most preps I have come across are complete d-bags. Not all though, I have friends and various acquaintances that are totally cool, and in fact probably don't think three minutes about what they are wearing, they just grab what they like and go about their merry way. It's more the culture that revolves around Fairfield CT and it's surrounding environs that I'm thinking of.
I've come across some huge preppy d-bags and some huge redneck d-bags. Then there was that one skinhead that wanted to kick my ass one time. Oh, and that skater that stole my board one time. Man, d-bags just come in all shapes and sizes. Any clique or status will give some members a chip on their shoulder and reason to be a dick to outsiders.
Golf community + bankrupted soul = Weston, FL

Truth.
Ignorant folk come in abundance from every status and occupation on earth.
Thank goodness that decent, loving folks also come from every walk of life.
If you ask me, this makes our world a beautiful place to be in.
Our aim should be to treat everyone - and thus ourselves - honorably, while also learning from our intellectual pursuits and actual physical encounters.
I believe this was the Greco-Roman ideal of Uomo Universale: "the universal man". Not a final destination but a constant journey of learning and reinvention.
I count some of my very best friends as preps. I'm sure there are rotten ones as well. But I have to admit I find it ironic that a site called "Ivy Style" seems, at times, to underestimate the great contributions, both sartorial and cultural, that prepies/Wasp made to civic life in America.
That said, I find our forum's social critiques and conversations very stimulating and welcome the spirit of open debate permeating through our board.
We are all good here, yes we are!
