Oh yeah. I remember that pic. Great stuff.
How I envy our American brothers, living in a universe enriched by Tiki culture!
It never quite made it across the Atlantic at the time and still hasn't.
I'm still working on my Tiki themed music room and bar, it's coming along great, except the surf idols haven't gone down too well with the missis and kids.
There's an original Trader Vic's in Emeryville too.
The Kon-Tiki was an int'l chain of tiki dinner lounges and the first one opened in Montreal in '58 (I think it was attached to the old Sheraton) and it lasted until the very early '80s. It was completely dark and windowless inside (as any good bar should be!) and was filled with lagoons, colored lighting, cascading waterfalls, planked walkways, blowfish lanterns, tiki statues and large palms. There's also an unrelated Polynesian styled hotel in Pismo Beach called the Kon-Tiki Inn. We're stopping over for a night on our way to LA (for a tiki wedding at Don The Beachcomber's in Long Beach!) for July 4th weekend.
