Re: Tropical ivy

I was watching old cartoon shorts the other day and got inspired to wear a lightweight poplin sack suit with thick striped tee underneath and poplin bucket hat. Sort of a castaway-ivy-beachbum look. no socks with sandals!

Re: Tropical ivy

That's funny ... Who were you channeling?

The other day I flipped on the tube and saw the first episode of Gilligan's Island

I was always drawn to shows like Flipper, Sea Hunt, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and of course Thunderball, which really delivers with respect to beautiful women in neoprene wetsuits

Hawaiian Eye, Hawaii Five-0, Jacques Cousteau, Creature From the Black Lagoon, all Tarzans, National Geographic's great feature on the teen captain of Dove who sailed the world solo, Dick Van Dyke as Robinson Crusoe USN, Treaure Island, A High Wind in Jamaica, Pippi, etc.

all of these were  formative Tropical Ivy influences

The price seems reasonable for such an incomparably hideous garment.  I'm reaching for my credit card.  Only thing better than making people laugh is paying tons of money to do it.

Re: Tropical ivy

In Leelo's defence he is from Florida, the heartland of that look. So he's a little blind to it. wink

Re: Tropical ivy

That's more gay Palm Springs than Boca. Everyone in Miami dresses like Morty Seinfeld.

Re: Tropical ivy

It's probably not so much Boca as you suggest, but I can assure you that you're more likely to see more Pitbulls ("Mr. 305") than Morties. I grew up down there in the early 00's and a typical outfit for a night out consisted of a deep v-neck t-shirt and some skin-tight jeans and some obnoxious Armani sunglasses to boot. It strays pretty far from some of the lovely pics displayed earlier in the thread.

Re: Tropical ivy

Doesn't Morty Seinfeld live in a complex called Del Boca Vista?

Re: Tropical ivy

I think so. I couldn't tell you what the kids are wearing, I hang out with old Miami jews who eat pickled herring, shop at target and wear white oversized velcro sneakers.

Re: Tropical ivy

There's some tropical gold in here: https://sites.google.com/site/thestoryofbritishamerican/staff-magazines-and-annual-reports/tropical-light-spring-1957

Be sure to scroll through the chapter index on the left, there's some great photo content!

Particularly cool stuff found here: https://sites.google.com/site/thestoryofbritishamerican/chapter-2-stories/chapter-1-the-history-of-british-american-1920-to-1988

Check out the Caribbean Lee Club Convention in Haiti and dig that cat in what was probably a batik dinner suit with straw fedora and shades! Look at all those long cut sacky summerweight silk and polin suits!

It keeps getting better and better as I dig deeper... I stumbled on this page while researching The Hermitage Plantation Inn in Charlestown, Nevis.
