Re: Groundhog Madras

Some of the RL genuine bleeding madras has been hitting TK Maxx over the past couple of months. There was a short-sleeve BD shirt and a plaid tie or two. Some of plaid colours used on the long sleeve shirts from this year's RL summer season were pretty damn good, muddy in a good way...

Re: Groundhog Madras

This is what Richard Press (grandson of J. Press of the iconic Ivy League store) said on Ivy Style about authentic "bleeding" madras:

“It can only be birthed by hand and cannot be produced in large quantities. The cloth is fragile and not successfully tailored by computer. A bleeding madras that has been bled in an unforgiving wash basin can be imitated only by a poet."

Ralph Lauren's is NOT "birthed by hand."

There's also been much discussion on Ask Andy about whether Ralph Lauren's fabric "bleeds." The consensus is "No." "Bleeding" BTW is NOT the colors coming out in the laundry water.

"Spin Evans" posted this on the Ask Andy Bleeding Madras thread on 4/14/2014: "Yeah, I decided to test the "guaranteed to bleed" RL items a few weeks ago. I put a NWT RL Rugby shirt in a mixing bowl and filled it withnear-boiling water. I also laid a strip of paper towel halfway in the bowl to test how much dye leeched out. After letting it sit for about and hour, I pulled the strip out and it dried to solid white."

See ours on Etsy. (Posted: 10/12/2015. 9:10 PM PT.)

Re: Groundhog Madras

A simple explanation of how a pre-order group buy would work. Comments? Interest?

There are four patterns available.
We can can get shirts in a single pattern ready once we have a 20 orders for that pattern
The pre-order period will be 2 weeks.
If, that the end of the pre-order period, the minimum of 20 shirts has not been met, you will be refunded promptly, otherwise, the order will go to the factory for production.  The shirts will be expected to be delivered at the end of December.

Re: Groundhog Madras

I've just spent too long trying to work out what the hell this thread is about.

Are shirts being made and sold by someone?
If so, what do they look like or what vintage shirt are the based on?
Any details available at all?
Button down?
Locker loop?
Popover?
French cuffs?
Grandad collar?

What is going on here and, more importantly, should this thread be pinned or deleted?

Re: Groundhog Madras

Yeah I think most people on here won't be in for buying material but would be interested (At the right price and with a shirt to go on -e.g. if it was same as that New England model) in buying a shirt made of that material.

Re: Groundhog Madras

After doing a bit of digging,

The New England Shirt Co. 'bleeding madras' shirts were made for...
http://www.davidwood.com/
....and have nothing to do with the Etsy links given above, 'David Wood of Portland' did not get their fabric from this supplier.

Etsy are currently investigating the seller,
as attempts to take second payment/unauthorised repeat purchases on purchasers accounts have already been reported.
This is why the Etsy links to the shop are all now dead.

Re: Groundhog Madras

Very odd, yet the link to the newspaper article and the info over on Ivy Style would seem to make it appear kosher?

Let's see what happens - but agree, seems to be very little info on anything other than single needle tailoring!

Re: Groundhog Madras

The fabric may have the same source in India but the Etsy seller has not supplied David Wood with any fabric.

It looks very much like that the Etsy seller is trying to sell a product on someone else's provenance,
hoping the buyer makes positive links to an existing product to gain favour for their own unproven product.

It's all a bit snide in my opinion.

Re: Groundhog Madras

Oh ye skeptics, explain how we have a flickr photo of said fabric, dated January 2015, on a flickr account that has the name of user aucociscokid, with photos of Aleck bearing his name.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/23834346@N03/16217986920/

The fabric did not exist until this one man made it happen.  It's quite a stretch to think that the Indians took this (recently revived) slow and laborious process and created identical surplus for some bored housewife selling on Etsy.  Why steal his identity?  His brash zealousness is arguably the least desirable part of the whole venture for many consumers.
It seems much more likely that the initial investor had to commit to a certain quantity, and was left with excess by his initially timid customers and contractors.

Re: Groundhog Madras

Agreed but clearly something has gone a bit belly up...maybe the aucociscokid can come forward and explain the situation...he may have been processing double transactions if there was multiple yard ordering and then that got picked up...i didnt thinknyou had any say over how you charge on etsy...i thought it was automated from what you list

Re: Groundhog Madras

Thank you, Chatsworth!!! The situation is essentially correct as you describe it. My search  for authentic "bleeding" madras, which started here

http://www.indiamike.com/india/chennai-madras-f24/retail-sources-for-bleeding-madras-fabric-by-the-meter-t217153/

in April, 2014, has been amply documented step-by-step along the way on sites such as Ask Andy and Styleforum.

"Bleeding" madras has not been produced in 45+ years. I posted an email from the HHEC to that effect here.

IT IS AVAILABLE NOWHERE ELSE. FROM NO ONE ELSE.

(Someone on SF posted that he's been looking for it for 40 years. This is our experience, too. Major fabric wholesalers and other retailers have been looking all over India for as long to no avail.)

I - and a colleague now - am involved in every step of the process. We design the patterns, we - after being mentored by a master/dyer weaver who remembered it from the 1960s - did all the dyeing/weaving ourselves, we sell it.

Now that things are taking off, we - and the master/dyer weaver - have mentored other weavers in his village who were weaving silk how to weave it.

David Wood Clothiers bought yardage from us to have New England Shirt Co. make into shirts to sell in their store.

Call up David Hodgkins/David Wood Clothiers and/or Bob Kidder/New England Shirt to confirm any/all of this.

(David Hodgkins, Bob Kidder, and Jeff Rose at Upmarket Stitchers, who may be doing sports jackets all agree that I'm a pain in the neck, which to me is just persistence.)

The piece goods on Etsy are an order from a Brooklyn retailer who didn't pay.

We are going to be doing something with Styleforum, whereby Styleforum members can pre-order shirts. The shirts will be made for us under our label on a CMT basis, if you know what that is.

Re: Groundhog Madras

No, but then dont get bolshi either if you're coming on here to sell your wares. This is a forum after all, and we try to keep each other informed, thanks for letting us know. Is there any suggestion to why people's cards were being double charged?

Re: Groundhog Madras

Who are you "Bop" and how do you know cards are being double-charged? If you don't have personal knowledge, why did you post it?? Even if they were, it doesn't go to my integrity. Does it?

Your "issue" as I will politely call it, is something - I suggest - which - more appropriately - could have been raised - and resolved, if required,  via PM.

I'm completely transparent. Ask me a question. I respond. My integrity is beyond question. You want references? Look at my Linkedin.

Re: Groundhog Madras

Well are cards being double charged? Why has your Etsy shop been taken down?

I was responding to this comment..made by another poster

"Etsy are currently investigating the seller,
as attempts to take second payment/unauthorised repeat purchases on purchasers accounts have already been reported.
This is why the Etsy links to the shop are all now dead."

Not my comment.. is the above true?
