Can I put a shout in for Hiram's Roadstand on Palisade Avenue in Fort Lee, NJ.
Open since 1928 and a purveyor of the 'deep fried' hot-dog variant (fried until it pops open if you order 'a ripper'), great fries , a variety of 'heritage' sodas on tap including 'birch-bark' beer and sasparilla and has a shirt staining chilli so don't wear your best 'Makers' shirt ( avoid the burgers tho', not their forte).
It's around the corner from a friends recording studio and I became totally addicted after a few weeks working there.
You can see the back of my head in shot in an episode of 'Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations' that was filmed there (its in the first season of the show episode 3 or 4).
whatchoo talkin' 'bout? 'Scoe's is great! a soul legend! sheeeiiitttt! Me and Flav hang there, that takes care of that!
P.S. there is still a Southern city among all the other cities that make up Miami, you of all people should know this!

Is that Shorty's Bar-B-Q on S. Dixie?
I'll take you up on that, Stan!
Miami's my second home (I guess third now that I'm living in SF) but I can't say I've ever had good 'que in South Florida.
I made the mistake of stopping at The Pit on SW 8th on the way back from the Everglades last year... bleecch!!!
I've had BBQ all over the South but Memphis/Nashville win for me. I hear what Stan's saying though and there's probably good to great roadside pits and pop-ups in most Southern states. I've been to some newer places like Blue Willy’s and Tom Jenkins B-B-Q in Pompano and while they don't stack up to what I've had in Memphis, they were still great and destination worthy. Just don't go to the damn Pit if you're ever driving along SW 8th!! I ended up feeding my ribs to a feral cat, haha.
... no worries, we don't go to the Pit ... been to Memphis, ate lots of 'que .... I like the place but not necessarily for the barbeque ....... driving between Florida and New England all those years made me a barbeque hound who's eaten around ....

Over the past few years there have been a lot of roadside barbecue guys popping up around here. They'll just have their smoker and grills set up in a parking lot. In Georgia, you could probably eat barbecue at a new place every day for two years straight.
I've had better BBQ in Nashville than I've had in North Carolina, but I've only been through Wilmington and Chapel Hill.
I personally rate Nashville tops for BBQ.
I've had amazing brisket in Texas though.
