^ Franklin Barbeque in Austin for the brisket and somewhat surprisingly the turkey.
Smitty's is heaven (or maybe hell, I'm not sure!) but Harold's in Abilene and Harmon's in Cibolo (en route to San Antonio) were two of my favorites. I also loved Black's!

And of course, Kreuz Market in Lockhart for beef brisket!!
Texas is definitely the state you want for brisket. That stuff is phenomenal.
Pisgah National Forest and Sliding Rock in the old days! canoeing in Pisgah!
PS - Have you eaten at Payne's or Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous in Memphis?
You can't NOT call that BBQ man!
Heck yeah! The Brown in Louisville, The Hermitage in Nashville, and The Peabody in Memphis!
The chopped pork sandwich at Payne's is one of the greatest on earth!!!!
Nice. I want to take my wife there to watch the ducks, she hasn't been before!
I'm a member of The National Trust for Historic Preservation so I get discounts at all of those properties.
Have you visited Union Station in Nashville? They transformed it into a hotel while preserving the interior and even restored some of the original train cars, it's pretty neat. I've never stayed there because I love The Hermitage but it's pretty cool to visit.
I will, Stan!
Have you been to Lusco's in Greenwood?
You have to go there and order the porterhouse next time you're driving through; it's an incredible timewarp! You're seated in private curtained booths, not unlike Sam's Grill in SF. It's a must-experience destination in the Delta!
