The penny arcade on the Wharf... FINALLY an experience I can say we've shared.
HA
farrago, you can see the house of mirrors and other old dark rides in the great '59 Twilight Zone episode with Richard Conte, "Perchance to Dream"! I think it was filmed partly on location at Playland in SF and partly at Pacific Ocean Park in Santa Monica.
This was screened at The Castro a few years ago -

It's not a good movie by any stretch but there's a wealth of archival photos and the seller for me is approx. 30 minutes of 8mm home movies shot in black and white and color, including some 16mm tv and newsreel footage which is a gas to see.
Lusco's = bucket list kind of place, for me ... got hung up in Oxford and couldn't make it to Greenwood but next time for sure ...
... by the way Oxford was all that on its own and then some .....

This doesn't really compare to Ollie's recollections, but I spent almost a full week in a vacant apartment in LaPlace, donated by the landlord / mechanic that was trying to fix my broken down van, which had blown a head gasket. I ended up getting a really bad cold and finally took a Greyhound bus back to Atlanta. I ate horrible fast food and convenience store junk food the entire time. I think I treated myself to some bad seafood joint one night. It was actually really cold weather too. A definite high point for me. I'm sure there are some good places to eat in LaPlace, but it's a town I don't care to revisit.
^ You avoid Austin, that's what.
It's really a shame too, as it was really such a unique place. I had some fantastic memories there. First time I rolled into town I was moving from here to Santa Barbara, and drove 25 hours straight from VB to Austin. Left at 9pm on Friday night and got to Austin 10pm on Saturday. Checked into hotel and showered, right out to the bars, partied till sun came up. Every bar was three stories tall, and had a different band on every level, playing completely different music.
Ah, now I'm sad.
I know they're Mid-Atlantic but I always though Washington was considered to be a part of "The South".
I've only been to Arlington and Alexandria though, so I guess that's not really Virginia!
I'd like eventually to visit Richmond and maybe drive through a few quaint 'olde' towns like Charlottesville or Middleburg; parts of the coastline (Chincoteague?) though I don't know much about that region. I'd also like to do the Blue Ridge Parkway, up around Meadows of Dan or nearby in the fall. It's not high on my list of places to visit though.
What's wrong with Austin?
I have friends who live in the city and I was friends with a girl who used to run the programming for the Alamo Drafthouse. I don't give a toss about the hipster-rock fests but what's your gripes with Austin?
