/\  great stuff Sidewinder and of course Oliver and Harpo for the killer Jimmy Smith and Dr. John pics ...

but give it up for two-on-the-sleeve, chalk-striped, print-shirt-wearing bad bad Jr. Walker as he gets down on his sweet potato, broccoli and cheese, macaroni and cheese, bottle of Coke ....

Now, I like sweet candied yams
Hot gravy
That pot roast
That pickled beets
And sugar toast

Home Cookin' is a great tune!

/\  I am so there ... having eaten as many hot dogs at Pink's as any man still alive I now go for the kraut dog with cheese, easy onions, and mustard accompanied by a Bubble-Up soda!  or a Polish dog with kraut and three Bubble-Ups, you'll need 'em!

what's your Pink's order Ollie?

P.S. We love you Hal Blaine!

Dagnabit! Casper's is a true oldie. My dad introduced me to this East Bay institution when I was a kid.
Oscar's in Berkeley is about to pass into the history books within the month. I've got to get over there for a final burger.

I've been going through a comparative exercise about which place in the Bay Area has the best burgers. Bill's on Clement Street drops a notch because the burgers are not  flame grilled. A bit pricey, too.
Tennessee Grill out on Taraval does a flame grilled burger.
Val's over in Hayward stands out.

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

I took my dad last weekend and he said it was the best hamburger he'd ever tasted.

I ordered the Joe's Special.

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

That's called the Heathcliff, Stan! smile

Good move. I love Chef Creole and the people that run the place are so nice! I mistakenly took my severely allergic-to-gluten sister last time and I think they were insulted that she wouldn't eat anything, haha. I also rear ended some crazy chick in the narrow parking lot and wasted most of the afternoon standing around in the hot sun because she insisted on calling the cops, as if they care. It was the smallest fender bender and one of the guys behind the counter came over and offered to brush some white-out on, haha. She wasn't amused though. After approx. 2 hours I think she finally got clued in that nobody was coming and we exchanged insurance cards and split.

Have you ever been to La Camaronera fish market in the strip mall on W. Flagler? It's family run by a bunch of Cuban fishermen and it's so good! It doesn't have any vintage charm at all and looks completely new on the inside (although it's been around since 1966) but the place is always packed and lively and the catch is so fresh and preparation is surprisingly light and not heavy despite the menu consisting mostly of fried seafood. I think their fried yellowtail sandwich is one of the best around!

Thanks, Oli. I had forgotten about the Joes. My dad has been wanting to go to Original Joes. Soon. Real soon...

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

From what I remember, theirs were even better than Capt. Jim's. I think they were probably the best conch fritters we had and I ordered them just about everywhere!

I ordered a Peking Duck in Chinatown the other night btw, and it wasn't half as good as the Mai-Kai!!
