Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

The amount of food signage in this one pic is astounding...

Drink Coca-Cola
Pastrami
Malts
Foot Long Chili Dog
Shake
Cones
Float
Soda
Sundae
Thick Large Shake
Burger/double burger and fried chicken off to the left
Steak Platter

Then in the background...
Breakfast (served all day)
Fresh Donuts Made Here
Coffee and a donut only 15 cents

Absurd. I would never leave.

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

I made some excellent chili last night, Texas-style, natch, and so I was looking for shots of vintage chili parlors ... found a few and will post them too ....

... not the places that serve up that Cincinnati junk though ....

but my research turned up this beautiful cartoon ad featuring Mr. Magoo, who was of course voiced by the great Jim Backus, late of Gilligan's Island:

Never forget the sage advice of master chili cook Drayton Sawyer: "Don't skimp on the meat!"

I meant to ask you what and where that place was/is?  I want to go there tomorrow if possible so let me know ASAP, thanks.

Southwest corner of Pico and Lincoln in Santa Monica, in 1966. Get a thick large shake for me.

I see you've got a few chili fixin' tricks up your sleeve MCM .... fair enough ... rest assured there's plenty of cilantro in my evil brew ...... cumin, cayenne, oregano, etc. too ....

the other stuff, well, I can't confirm or deny it but I will say I like the way you think .... you've got two things in there I don't use in chili but that doesn't mean they're not worth a try next time, if I survive this batch, that is ........
