Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

There's some newer cocktail lounges at the end, but they're all really well done and usually put money into restoring and preserving the heritage buildings that they're housed in. There's also all the old mid century roadhouse and western style restaurants in San Bernadino County: Sycamore Inn, Magic Lamp Inn, Iron Skillet for breakfast, probably others I'm forgetting... the further along old route 66, the more interesting.

Except Santa Barbara is heaven on earth and L.A. is a hell hole.

Next time you are down in L.A. check out the Stinking Rose if you want some interesting Italian, has really cool decor too.

Musso & Frank's flannel cakes can be very good too ...... I like Du-Par's a lot because it's pretty close to our house, Pacific Dining Car is a bit of a trek ....

LA .... still has a load of great spots but I also pine for many that are gone ......

btw Ollie, Taylor's Steakhouse (1953) has one of the best burgers in LA, if you haven't been to Taylor's it's great but of course the hipsters discovered it a few years ago but still, sit in the front by the bar and watch a baseball game while you have a burger or a steak or prime rib and enjoy a strong cocktail .... you should like it .......

What was the joint in Pulp Fiction?  Is it still open?

Also, Huddle House is still around, but they are far less numerous than Waffle House.

Huddle House is so superior it's not even funny. My buddy had one directly across the street of his place when we lived in Charleston.

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

Me and the lady were frequenting a Huddle House about 2 years ago.  We'd try to get breakfast there at least once a week.  Then we kind of got tired of it.

Another thing of note is that Waffle Houses still have jukeboxes in all their locations, not that there's anything in them you'd want to play.

I know right. It's always like the current Tim McGraw album and Totally 90's anthology or some shit.

Though the Huddle House in Chucktown had Dixieland Delight on theirs, which was a winner.

Some of the Waffle House machines used to have songs with Waffle House themes.

Make Mine With Cheese
They're Cooking Up My Order
Waffle House Steaks
Waffle House For You And Me
Waffle Do Wop
I'm Going Back to the Waffle House

... and so on.

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

My friend's been out in Orange County near Irvine every week lately for work, and he has told me a few times how much of a nightmare that part of the area is.  He did find a good old style Italian restaurant he was pretty excited about.  He said it seemed like a long-standing establishment.  I'll try to extract the name next time I talk to him.

Re: Coffee bars, diners, forgotten roadside eateries

The Stinking Rose is a California chain, isn't it?

I love Original Micelli's in W. Hollywood for the vintage red and white checkered tablecloth, dimly lit, wine casks hanging from the ceiling atmosphere. My favorite is Filippi's Pizza Grotto in San Diego though; great old school red sauce trattoria! Old Trieste which is a bit more upscale (Italian red sauce / steakhouse and continental fare) is also fantastic. I was there with friends last summer; there's a great curvy streamlined leather bar with low-back vintage bar stools covered with sparkly blue naugahyde. Lots of fun! I've already made reservations for Christmas at La Dolce Vita in Beverly Hills. It's a bit more upscale and the food is supposed to be great. I haven't been yet, but it was a big Rat Pack hangout in the 50s and 60s. I'm looking forward to that!

Me and the lady must have eaten at Micelli's.  You describe the place we ate to a T, and it was in W. Hollywood, I think off Hollywood Boulevard???  This was years ago.  We were just out walking, were starving, and probably followed the smell of garlic.  I can't remember what I got, but it was decadent!!!
