There's a guy I see running in my neighborhood all the time. I guess he's what you'd call an avid runner. The guy's a beast. He'll run past my house, then I'll see him run past again 30 minutes later, then he'll run past again in another 30 minutes. He must be putting some serious mileage on his feet. But he runs in these really low profile shoes that almost look like shower slippers. They appear to have practically zero sole or cushioning.
I actually just saw him pass my house again. This time he was rolling in a wheelchair.
Quite a bit of insoles/stabilizers/absorbers at Silvermans..and I was in the other the other week too?!?!?.... Typical!

For real walking and running you need to go all in and get the modern version with torsion control, motion stabilization and all that jazz. The retro models are great for moderate walking, are comfortable and provide great support. For feet issues, hip and back discomfort the 993's and 940v2 are the way to go. Mind you, these are quite unfashionable and unstylish.
Going to an orthopedic/podiatrist doctor and having your gait examine would be the ideal way to go.
Hopefully this thread will dissuade enthusiast from second hand, vintage footwear. Cool as a second hand shoe may be, in the long run, they can cause unpleasant damages to our health.

Oh no - I was just talking to everyone in general terms - your 997's are fantastic. The 993 and 940v2 are more for extended running and heavy duty walking in uneven surfaces.
And of course we all have different needs. I have flat feet, so I have to wear the extra goofy kind.

I have started 'The New York Nobody Knows' written by a professor who over the course of four years, whilst researching the book, extensively walked every neighbourhood in the city's five boroughs, interviewing people he met on the way. During this endeavour he wore out nine pairs of San Antonio shoes, described by him as 'the most comfortable and durable shoes I've ever owned'.
Out of curiosity and remembering this thread I had a look at their website. They are comfort type shoes but a couple of the styles aren't too bad, there are some suede bluchers in the dress shoes section that looked okay. Made in the USA as well.

I can understand how the New Balance angle would appall many on here coming from a classic retro/Mod/Purist Ivy stylee..
But having drifted into the workywear/B Boy/ippy opper type get up in the 90s, part of me is still very fond of em...
I deffo have a pair of the 577s...think they were made in England too...which may be why I got em? I bought a second pair towards the end of my reign here so know these are in excellent nick!
And a pair of almost walking shoes Trainer jobbies...in the vein of Merrell stuff which was quite new back then over here and deffo worn by a few of us... I even wore Merrell Hiking boots in a how'd I'd go a la Red Wing way??!?
Anyone remember Fly on the KIngs Rd? Fellas there were involved with Stussy/Supreme & the like… very much part of my thing back then..
All very comfy of course…
About a year ago I was thinking of digging some of these out as it goes but now I feel I must in light of my rotten hoof…
The Geeky side greatly appeals to me to at my time of life too…
I favour a bigger jean and think NB may just go great with em – I’ve some 201s on today which I’d actually like to see with them ha ha…
Nurse….Nurse…..
Living pretty much in Red Wings too, I know my poor ole plates don’t know what’s hit em when I put the Purcells on..or even pennies now to a degree..
I just like a solid soled shoe these days.. the boots…brogues..and of course Paraboot…which I really have fallen for big time in the last few years…
Oh Gawd…I’ve turned…I know it…
Where’s Nurse Ratched with the medication when you need her….
Was ogling feet around Ox St lunchtime...quite a few NB on display...you n me got company Stan.... or are we just as common as muck?!?
I loved the old suede N e w B a l a n c e shoes back in high school. Now I run in some N e www Ballance, but I'm not sure the model. They're pretty ugly and have zero cool factor - just an ugly white running shoe. They're comfortable though, which was my goal when looking for a shoe to run in.
*fixed*
