The OCBD of your dreams

What would it be? Vintage or new ones, doesn't matter.

I have come to the fact that I will NOT find a BB, white six-button. Ever. But that's a Dream OBCD. Though I think Fitzgerald supposedly were gonna make some white six-buttons...

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Can someone explain to me the fascination with 6 buttons - I've never understood it. It's all about the roll baby!

The best collar roll I own is a Sero.

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

As far as I have understood, the advantage of the 6-button is for those who go sans-tie. The distance between the top and second button is slightly more than on a 7-button placket. As a result, the 6-button shirt with the top button undone lays better than the 7-button shirt with the top button undone.

Beyond the functional reason, my only guess is that maybe it was a more ubiquitous choice back in the day. Or it's otherwise an attempt to go against the modern trend of 7-button shirts, just like we prefer sacks over the overwhelming trend toward darted suits today.

Since I only go tieless on weekends, I don't really go out of my way to get 6-button shirts, but that's my impression. Someone who staunchly adheres to the 6-button placket will probably have a more truthful observation.

My perfect OCBD costs $5 and doesn't skimp on fullness or collar size.

The 6-button allows more chest hair billow to show.  A plus in my book.

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Like Tommy. my ideal OCBD is a light Green and its got to be a Makers.
The only relevance for a 6 button makers for me is the slightly longer Collar that comes with it.
It also does look better with a T too.

I am not sure what you are saying about collar size there Dom.
I have three Fitzgerald's and the collar is the same size as a 6 button makers.

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Nah, no way. My Fitz has a larger collar! Probably larger Fitzgerald's have the same size collar as, let's say, Small (mine is an S). The Makers shirts have a collar that's about 1cm shorter...

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

It is actually 1,5cm. 9cm on my Fitz, 7,5cm onmy late 50s Makers smile

Ideal would be 8cm I suppose (on my size)

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

My 6 button Makers all have a 3" collar. Size is 15,5. They are from different decades, from the 1950s to the 90s...

Fitz is about 3,5". I can think that the collar on the Fitz is always the same, but on the Makers they varied and got bigger with size?

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Yeah.  My point measures about 3 inches going full tilt.  That's average, right?

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Yes it does... The Fitz rolls a tad 'too much'. Something in between would be 'it'...

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

All my Makers, 14.5 to 15.5, six- and seven-button, have approximately 3.25 - 3.5" points.  Not a single one is a laughable 3. The Fitz has a legit 3.5 incher, by my measurement.

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Aren't the Mercer collars around 3.7" with 6 buttons? Seems rather large, but I haven't seen to many pictures of them worn without ties. I'm thinking of trying one, but they're really expensive.

Jivy take advantage of the 'first time buyer' discount of 25%.

I have a couple of Mercers, an oxford and a poplin both are lovely shirts, I wouldn't go for their oxford again (others make nicer oxford IMHO) but the poplin is superb
The Mercers shirts are just under 3-1/2" (7/16ths to be exact), some nice pics on their website.

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

That's weird.  My Mercer point is just over 3.5.  Perhaps we're uncovering a general inconsistency here, or either some of the points have shrank in the wash over time?

Re: The OCBD of your dreams

Called me biased but I do love the fizzy's, though the early Gant ruggers were a good otp option - not bought any for a few years now, but damn those monkey length arms.

Not tried mercer and though I would like to, the customs sting even with the discount makes the fizzy a more cost conscious option.
