Crewneck undershirts worn under shirt with top button unfastened

Ok, y'all, I keep hearing that if you wear a shirt unbuttoned at the top, you should wear a V-neck undershirt instead of a crewneck. But it seems lots of guys wear crewnecks under such shirts regardless -- myself included. But lately I've been wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy some V-necks. Gentlemen, do y'all wear V-necks in such situations or no? Thanks.

I wear crew and v-neck.  They're all thrown in the same drawer, so which variety I choose is based on pure chance.  I couldn't really give a crap about the undershirt showing above the open collar of my button-down.

Was that could give a crap or couldn't give a crap WM?

Personally I set great store by having just the right amount of white crew neck showing under the shirt. The neck of the vest needs to come up to the right height and create a nice straight line across without going baggy. I have bought various brands of tee shirt over the years trying to achieve perfection in this area. I have had good results with a brand only to find that the next time I buy them the manufacture has changed and they no longer represent the ideal. It's one. Of the great quests of my sartorial world.

I use singlets except in cold weather and no-one cares what you look like when it is well past freezing.

I only wear crew-neck shirts. A V-neck undershirt is a concept I fail to grasp to be honest, it makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Re: Crewneck undershirts worn under shirt with top button unfastened

The crew-necked T-shirt worn with an open-necked shirt was pretty much standard campus attire back in my undergraduate days (1959-1963). These days I don't much like the look, by and large. A heavy, colorful shirt worn like a Haines Beefy-T worn with something like a flannel shirt is fine for a casual, outdoorsy look. Otherwise, I think it looks sort of dorky--maybe okay for Marines, cops and such.

I wear v necks exclusively at work. I don't like the undershirt showing. It doesn't look as professional too me. Casually I will wear a crewneck tee. On Saturdays I often wear a grey crewneck tee.

Sometimes I wear a crew, more usually standard sleeveless vest (GB meaning of vest not US).  Sometimes I even wear a sleeveless henley with the buttons peeping out.  I avoid v-necks though - a bit too metrosexual for me.

Re: Crewneck undershirts worn under shirt with top button unfastened

I would  never wear a V neck t-shirt. For me the holy grail is a white heavy cotton crew neck with a neck that keeps shape in a decent length with correct short sleeves. The search goes on. Recently I bought some FOTL shirts and they weren't that good. I would pay for decent t-shirts.

I'm uncomfortable with Sal's idea that the v neck is somehow "metrosexual".  Did I miss something?  It's just a tshirt right?
