Re: Pendleton

The collars can be hardwork, same with topsters. My topster of choice sports the clover leaf style lapel. The worst is the seagul of doom ie when the collar piece extends out further than the piece beneath, typical of the 1950s to early 60s ones.

Re: Pendleton

One of my favourite brands. I have a couple of board shirts (one of them the classic Beach Boys plaid) and half a dozen of the Seaside short sleeved shirts, which I live in during the warmer months.

Re: Pendleton

What's a Sportster? Googling it only brought up pictures of motorcycles.

It'd be nifty to compile a pictoral guide of all the numerous models by Pendleton. One which includes, for example, the Topster and the Topsman and their small but important differences.

Re: Pendleton

What do you guys normally wear under the board shirts? OCBD? T-shirt?

Edit: Just realized Joey already asked this, but I'm also curious.

Re: Pendleton

Haha I'm glad you reiterated, though: Most of my posts have been ginormous blocks of text so a lot of fellows will likely have skimmed over it!

So far this winter, when I wear the board shirt going out, it's always been with a button-down underneath. However, I also wear my board shirt frequently around the house when I'm lounging about, in which case I typically just put it on over a tee shirt.

Come spring, I could see myself wearing the board shirt over just a tee when I go out, using it Beach Boys-style as a light jacket rather than a heavy overshirt.

Oh, and I will say once or twice on the coldest days of the season so far when I've had to be outside, I've worn the board shirt over a thin sweater. Once, it was a cotton V-neck over an OCBD. With the board shirt buttoned, the sweater was invisible and just acted as another layer of insulation. On another occasion, I wore a lambswool crewneck sweater over just my tee shirt and under the Pendleton. The casual interpretation of the same sort of idea.

Re: Pendleton

Exciting news, boys!

The two VTs I recently took a chance on arrived late today and are positively divine... They fit quite well (I was worried they might be too small) and they're in great shape, the only imperfection being a small tear on the label that is curiously present on both jackets.

This weekend at the latest, I'll share some photos of them, and I'll take measurements as well to compare to the other jackets. They are both the same size, and are smaller than the other VT. They fit similarly to the size 40R Brooks Brothers sport coats I own. There is no size indicated whatsoever so they may be a 40R or they might just be a Medium (in which case my first VT is likely a Large).

There's plenty more to say about them but I'll save the rest for when I have actual photos for ya'll.

In the mean time, I'll be contacting Pendleton to see if they can shed some light on the history of these jackets.

Re: Pendleton

Sorry for the delay in posting my latest acquisitions- I'll take some photos by the end of today.

I just received the long-awaited response from Pendleton regarding the history of what I've been calling the VT. And the result is....

"Regretfully, we do not have the resources to do any archive reviews."

At least I tried. Evidently I know more about these jackets than Pendleton does. Curious indeed.

I'll continue to update with any information I find on these jackets (although this thread is starting to feel more like a blog...)

My most recent feeling is that the VT designation is more truthful than I anticipated because I'm starting to think these sport coats were simply a short-lived variation on the Topsman.

I'm sure there are also some wonderful sociological points to make about this product as well, as it's an exemplary (albeit casual) example of the prevailing style that supposedly originated on the east coast, yet Pendleton is on the opposite side of the country. Additionally, as far as I can figure the VT was made in '68 or '69- a bit late for the heyday of Ivy League style.
