That's a Topster, witness the bias patch pockets vs the Topsmans which are non bias.
The problem with these online, is the pricing...Acton will sometimes justify a price by saying it's a rare plaid and I don't doubt his knowledge..but sometimes I'll see two topsters in the same plaid and similar condition going for such a difference in price..say $35 vs $98
Ultimately what we need is a regulated price enforced by the threat of WM coming round these seller's houses and putting bats up their nightdresses.
^ Some idiots seem to think that anything old is valuable. A lot of the junk people hawk online amazes me; especially when I see something that's been sitting on Etsy for 3 years with a $7 price tag... dump that shit at goodwill already!!
There was a slight variant on the above plaid with a light green in place of the yellow overcheck selling for $55 higher in the same exact condition. My problem is finding these Pendletons in size small though. There seems to be an abundance of mediums regularly listed on eBay but I'm still waiting for the right partridge brown or green color.
Small pre-'64 Topster in my shop, perfect shape, $30.

Why the heck are you selling that cool Penney's chambray s/s and why the heck isn't it a size 15?!?
It's just one of those shirts I've worn maybe 2 times at most. It's a seriously cool shirt, but kind of falls into the "collector piece" category. I'm trying to only have things in the "wear it frequently" category. At least that's what I'm trying to do. Trying real hard.
That looks very Topsman/ster friendly. The Topsman in my shop fits smaller than the Topster. If you compare the measurements, the Topsman is quite a bit smaller through the chest and it's also shorter. The sleeves are shorter too, but there's material to let, and if you wore it more like a sport coat, then there's nothing wrong with showing a little shirt cuff. But I have a Topsman that I actually wear that fits a bit more generously - more like my Topsters.
I've yet to bite the bullet on a true Topsman, believe it or not. I do now own several of what I like to call VTs, although really they should likely be counted among the numerous unpadded sport coats made in a generic 60s cut and shipped off to various men's stores to be branded with a new label and resold. They've helped me discover my ideal cut for a jacket, most notably the so-called "3/2.5" lapel with a functional top button rather than the tasteful but affected Brooks-style 3/2 where the top button is useful only as a decoration (that is certainly not, however, to say I've renounced my BB jackets!)
Funnily enough, my latest obsession is the standard Topster for which, up until recently, I had no apparent use. I decided I prefer it to the board shirt for anything but the most casual affairs. I've also since learned to appreciate it as a "Casual Friday" substitute for a true sport coat and now feel the need to add another to my collection since I presently only have one. So much for the whole "no unnecessary purchases in 2015" schtick!
I may end up convincing myself to keep my one Topster and only replace it once I've worn it into the ground. But the problem is I've found a few at good prices I really like. My favorite one on Ebay right now is rather similar to Oliver's new pick. But I probably shouldn't spend the money.
After all, I still haven't gotten that damn corduroy sport coat I'm convinced I need...
That's a beaut I have a pre 63 topster which has a printed size but I thought that was maybe because they were made for order in an XXL..well thats what Ackers said
I think that was the standard at least up until the mid sixties, but the nature of the printing means it's not difficult for the mark to wash off. That's my hypothesis, at least, for why some tend to not have size markings. The VTs are a separate mystery, and they're uncommon enough I feel like Pendleton tried it out and just decided that they didn't want to produce full-on sport coats. So weird.
Very bueno, Bop!
I agree a big chunk of the Pendleton jackets on Ebay are Christmas colored. I don't really have too much of an issue with the louder plaids but the wrong shade of red and/or the wrong ratio of colors can make a jacket seem tacky.
I really like that, Bop. I don't really crave any more Topsters, but I'd take one in that color in a second.
Has anyone tried their modern non-board and non button downs?
They seem to do far more online than I've seen in the flesh of course...
American Classics in town & Stuarts being my only visuals...
Yeah they're very nice..
Also follow these guys on instagram American based but they seem to do loads of Pendleton of various types new and old..
