Re: Acknowledgements to carpu65 :The Ivyist's Like & don't like.

Like.

Rise to be at my navel.

Trousers to be tapered to a specific set of data held on a computer that needs two keys to be turned in unison to access it.

Collars that bell curve with neckties.

Small horseshoe shaped belt buckles in gold or brass.

Big bastard gunboats of the blucher and longwing persuasion

White socks with simple plimsolls.

Shetlands in interesting colours.

Tweed, corduroy and tatersall

Pendleton Topsters, Topsman and Boardshirts in an array of jarring plaids or subtle shadow plaids.

That particular type of pale blue Oxford cloth you get that looks like a cloudless sky.

Timeless American 1920/30s style

Japanese Ivy Illustration

Dislike.

Straight cut trousers without a break.

Keydge for the most part.

The 1970s.

How people dress in Free & Easy magazine, or modern takes on Ivy/Americana

How uniqlo don't make long enough collars or midrise jeans.

Also the width of the shirt plackets on their ocbds.

Like -

A wide box pleat. Troy did them best.

Dislike -

A skinny one that doesn't function and is only there as a 'design feature'.

Re: Acknowledgements to carpu65 :The Ivyist's Like & don't like.

thanks Stan! Be careful with the longwings my friend, everytime I wear them I get a strange sensation of invincibility. Combine this with the 'ready to kill ya with one mistep' v cleat and you can find trouble easily.

The 'wash and wear' suits give me that indestructible feeling too, maybe it's the unnatural fibres affecting my brain?!

What shoe size are you Stan?

Re: Acknowledgements to carpu65 :The Ivyist's Like & don't like.

Hello to all,

Just arrived here after mucho anos lurking. Liked this topic very much. I'd chip in with :

Likes

Clothes and shoes made in America between 1960 and 1965, the true golden age in my opinion
so, I like old Bass Weejuns, 6-button Brooks Brothers shirts with the long scooped out tails, all the great Ivy sports jackets and suits

Dislikes

Many of the modern takes on Ivy style clothes. They're not as well made as the oldies. They are often solid and expensive but the spirit of the past is missing.

I'm an archivist I guess, just love the old stuff.

Re: Acknowledgements to carpu65 :The Ivyist's Like & don't like.

What I likes:

Sacks with a natural shoulder, took me a while to get into these but can't stand anything else now.
Well made button down shirts l/s or s/s, be they vintage or the well made few that we love and cherish.
Longwings, Loafers, Redwings and the multiple variants of the wonderful Playboy.
Neat hair - I have a high and fine hairline, too short does not work for me.
Fine outerwear like the Clicker Jacket, 60/40 wool and Cotton Haringtons and a well made raincoat
The Shetland in interesting colours
The heavy weight shawl collar knitted cardigan

What I doesn't like:

Fred Perry Polo Shirts
Straight cut trousers without a break, tried it - look like my dad
Small collars on ocbd's
Cheap footwear (particularly the cheap variety desert boot)
That look that says MOD, I hate the term though I like to think I am a modernist for my appreciation of style and design

Re: Acknowledgements to carpu65 :The Ivyist's Like & don't like.

Likes:

Natural shoulder jackets in herringbone tweed, I'll take legit 3 button or 3/2 roll.
Jackets in muted plaids
Center vent
Hook vent
Weird old lightweight jackets, like the old "Zephyr Weights" and Palm Beach jackets (good for those Georgia Springs and Summers)
Madras shirts and jackets
O'Connell's trousers
Mercer and Sons
Brooks Makers
Old Hathaway, Gant, Arrow, and Sero button-downs
Weird mid-century "fashion" ivy shirts with back collar buttons, popover plackets, etc., in paisley and batik prints or big stripes or weird plaids.  Even give me some Dacron blend.  Yeah, you heard right.
Navy and red gingham
A good taper and drape on my trousers with no break.
Single-breasted overcoats
Single-breasted rain coats
Vintage watches
Thin belts
Slim lapels
Tuck, no belt
Drizzler jackets
London Fog windbreaker type jackets
Old "clicker" style coats - Lakeland, McGregor, Niagara, etc.
Pendleton Topsters and Topsmans
Old Viyella shirts
A tidy four-in-hand or half windsor
J. Press flap pocket
Red Wing
Shuron
"Americana" style outerwear like Woolrich and Pendleton field coats and mackinaws
Wrangler 13MWZ jeans
Clark's desert boots
Vintage suits
Deep trouser pockets
Groom & Clean
Florsheim Imperials
Weejuns, but of course
Hairy mohair sweaters and brushed Shetlands
Cardigans
V- or crew-neck Shetlands

Dislikes:

Girl rise trousers
Critter / novelty clothing
Pointy shoes
Double-breasted jackets and coats
Shoulder padding
Peak lapels
Braided leather belts
Anything uncomfortable
More than three cuff buttons on jackets
Huge tie knots

And whilst we're on the subject of painful typos, I suspect I'm not the only one who would like to draw the attention of some of you - particularly one of our most beloved posters - to the following:
