Re: Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles - 1972

I watched up to the 32 minute stage, but then I had to go and see the Mark Rothko exhibition in the Hague, which was extremely disappointing as there where signs up advising attendees to preserve the silence so that the gallery viewer could recreate the religious experience Rothko had when creating the artwork when viewing it. I am sorry to say, I didn't see any religious fervor or experience in any of it, particularly the two identical charcoal canvases.

Anyway, back to the L.A. in 1972, interesting documentary so far, too much driving for my liking, but that's probably L.A. The decline of South Avenue into the Watts race riots has everything to do with the rise of the suburbs and the black middle class being able to move out of the district which resulted in the lack of contract with a thriving middle class to expire to. Well, at least that was one of the reasons for its decline.
