Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

I used to love the Johnny the Fox intro in my breakbeat obsesssive days. I also used to be heavily into Culture, and have seen them live once. (Nowadays I can still appreciate both.)

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

Moving on... I think itd be interesting to take Harpos ideas further...when you treat the large parts of the outfit as your main chord if you will..what intervals are good to chuck at it when it comes to accessories like, tie, ps, socks etc...the 7,9 move with the idea of Jazz harmony..i might knock up a pic..but in terms of people who like to wear blue like the image above...itd be a magenta, burgundy and aqua blue..

Technically though as colour only being one octave you dont get the 9, 11, 13 etc.

I am very partial to an aqua blue in my shirts.

If you don't know it and don't read music I can find a link.

You can with point to point measurements I just wasn't sure how to integrate them before. You have to merge the fractals inside each other..which is what I finally just got my head round with that last one

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

You'll see that pattern a lot in James Brown riffs (well music generally) even before the funky drummer joined.. Its a pretty pleasing pattern for us... Wide , narrow and the resolving into the intermediate all fractals of eachother

If you can sit through it there is a video on YouTube about the fractal nature of rhythm

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

My knowledge of visual art - excluding old clothes - is almost minimal, and I have taught 4 year olds who can draw better than me (no exaggeration) so it's all a bit over my head, but as I understand it: the lines represent the rhythm, and the choice of colours does not represent the rhythm in any way?

Makes sense in that a soundwave clearly shows lines making a pattern.

If you could make a piece of art using/representing any of the following: son clave, rumba clave, 6/8 bell pattern, there are musicians/musicologists who would be interested. At least one of those 3 patterns is used in pretty much every mambo, Latin jazz and salsa song ever recorded - which is thousands if not millions of tunes. And 6/8 bell pattern bears a very close relationship to the major scale, also used in thousands if not millions of tunes. Maybe they'd work visually as well.

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

So colours can only represent harmonies?

Can colours represent a scale? If so they could represent a rhythm too I assume, as the major scale and the 6/8 bell pattern are so closely related.

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

However son clave might be a better rhythm to start with.

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

But the Funky Drummer pic doesn't look like a colourful soundwave.

Re: Jazz and the Ivy Look

I've worked out the pattern in terms of spacing.. I think.. Its wide, mid, wide, narrow, wide..and repeat for ever ...which would explain its universal appeal.

With my head round that bit it should be easy

And yes you're exactly right with out the first beat of the next bar you don't get the narrow interval.. Which really drives it into the next bar
