That's great.  Steels have an amazing sound.  It's always done something for me.

I've gotta say, Junior Brown blew me away when I saw him recently.  It's good to see a man of that age get on stage and just obliterate the young group of ragtag alt-country hipsters that opened for him.

Re: How The West was Won

It would have been far more appropriate for him to just hire me to sit there in a chair and play country records before his set.

Yeah.  For him.  He'd have like twice as many people lined up outside the door.

Love a bit of Weylon Jennings - and in his youth was one cool cat.

Pretty sure he's button'd down here.

And this is a cracking shot of him with Buddy H.

He killed The Big Bopper!  Musically speaking, it was better he got on the plane than Jennings though.

A blurry, yet buttoned-down, Jennings in 1958.

I must say I have much more love for the era before all the rhinestone suits.

Sourced from the Deke Dickerson's "Bigsby files". Excellent site if you're into that stuff.

Also capitol country record covers.

Oh, of course.  The rhinestone suits are abysmally over the top.  But there were plenty of bejeweled acts that were pumping out delicious country and Southern fried gospel.  It's just hard to look at them.  I've always liked Chet Atkins' style back in the '50s and '60s, but even he succumbed to some of the unsavory trends of the '70s, like huge butterfly collars and polyester suits.  But here, he's looking great.

Re: How The West was Won

/\    the stand-up bass player mostly out of frame on the right is wearing a decent plaid shirt and some interesting split-toe moc hunting boots with white rubber soles which are reminiscent of a Red Wing-type workboot though unlike the Christy sole it has a defined heel ....

and Mr. Pork Chop Stomp on the left is looking early-fifties jivey, as he does, in his pleats

and that Bigsby he's holding is cool ....

this shot is so profoundly hillbilly but from his knees down Stringbean is legit Ivy with his trouser cuffs ...

I think country/western music fashion has to be among the most consistently and progressively revolting throughout the decades from Porter Wagoner's embroidered clown suits of primary rainbow colors to the '70s Glen Campbell sideburn era... barf!!!

Yes, Chet looked great I those early years (he toned down his appearance in his later years as well). It's fun watching those old Opry clips, and seeing how sophisticated he looks compared to the rest.
