Re: Tony's shoes

Like Curley's Gold, the legend is true. In fact I've put them on today in honor of their mention. Photo to follow later.

Re: Tony's shoes

They definitely made for Trickers by Sanders - I've spoken to several industry people about them and the who northants industry is pretty nepotistic.

Size wise maybe a touch bigger but only because the Sanders have the narrow toe last.

Re: Tony's shoes

Thanks, I'm an 8.5 US so if they fit relatively true to size, the 8 UK should work out.

Strange that Sanders makes them for Trickers both out of UK but exclusively for the Japanese market. You would think that Sanders would just do their own Playboy in brown calf leather and why the huge 3x price markup if they're coming out of the same factory. I kind of dig the black Sanders "Joel" chukka but it seems like such a useless color. What could you really pair black leather Playboys with? I guess a casual grey tweed suit for outdoor weekend wear could work but it seems petty impractical. I'd like to see them do a pair in cordovan color.

Re: Tony's shoes

Oli,
Sanders making for Trickers gets a mention in the weejuns blog (about another brand that does crepe sole stuff- Verginia) a few years back,

Re: Tony's shoes

Sanders actually make the George Cox playboys too, it's all to do with the factory output and what they are tooled for. GCs were made in a tiny 6 man shed when I went to see them being made, that need as these small craftsmen could not afford to operate in the new way. Once where everything they required was on their door step now has to be imported, so wanting a 100 eyelets for pop boys meant buying 1 million, etc etc.

Outsourcing is not unheard of in the industry - especially when they are all in touching distance of each other.

Re: Tony's shoes

I'm not up on my shoe lingo - what's meant by a faked roll welt grooving?

Would that be the piping effect that runs around the top circumference of the crepe sole?

I'm not sure how I feel about it; I'm sort of leaning towards the Sanders playboy sole as well although that seems to be present in the original playboy if you look closely at the top b&w photo of Tony that I posted on the previous page.

Re: Tony's shoes

On original playboys the was a leather strip that held together the body of the shoe and the crepe foxing. Today we have very good glues but back then they used the leather strip as the connecting device between the two, so on the Mudguard and many other modern playboys you have this thin groove which is supposed to replicate that. As you say the sanders one doesn't have this, but the Trickers style is chunkier so maybe the introduced it to make it look less heavy.

Personally it doesn't offend me and after 4 years it's not even noticeable on mine.
