Re: The Question of Sneakers

What's the scoop on the Rancourt sneakers that are supposed to be able to be resoled?

Do I have that right?  It occurs to me that the overall good sensible approach of buying higher quality and having it last longer might work here.

Lots of rain combined with warm weather here at the moment, don't wasn't to trash real shoes, going to Scotchguard a pair of Chucks to hell

Re: The Question of Sneakers

Rancourts are fashion sneakers; at least they're priced that way anyhow... $250 for casual kick around tennis shoes is dumb imo. They aren't performance shoes (not like you'll be running/exercising in them) and they aren't oxfords, loafers, etc. which makes them entirely non-functional for the price point. Nevermind that they're kind of ugly imo. The sleek white leather looks pretty tacky to me. I've kind of soured on the direction that Rancourt's been shifting in the past year or so.

Re: The Question of Sneakers

good to know, I haven't been to Rancourt's site for a long time, it doesn't work well for me

I've never spent anywhere near that amount for sneakers, didn't realize they were asking that much for them

cross those of the "look into" list ....

Re: The Question of Sneakers

Decided to keep both pairs of Sperry CVO btw, too cheap to trip on and can't be arsed to return them plus now it's a matter of Hemingwayesque pride in defeating them

But I have a regained respect for Chucks, and will order some more pairs as a reward to them for making the best cheap sneaker ever

Re: The Question of Sneakers

Haha get yourself some cheap $5 leather heel pads, stansh. They might help with your ankles since your feet will sit slightly higher and the added cushioning/comfort is helpful for these canvas foot destroyers. I always pop into one of the shoe shops in the Financial District and buy a pack whenever I get a new pair of these deck shoes.

Re: The Question of Sneakers

/\  nice tip, I've been kind of lusting after some groovy orthotics since Acton_Baby posted about his special custom Sperry CVO insoles yesterday or so ......

I have a bag of leather German insoles and all sorts of insoles for sneakers but I have no idea where it is, but I'm going to look into it

on the plus side, I've been wearing the navy pair with thick ski socks as house slippers as recommended and they seem to be loosening up and conforming a bit more to the back of my heel

so hopefully wearing them won't be my Achilles' last stand

Let's take the cheese.

Re: The Question of Sneakers

+1 on Oli's opinion on the Rancourt sneakers...

Generally the price policy of Rancourt (as well as other remarkable shoe makers - Alden for instance -) is questionable. Too high margins. I wonder if they need their margins for advertising? Highly doubt that.

Btw, the Camper Imar is extremely similar (well that one is made in China I suppose) but cheaper. Interistingly the Imar has been introduced as a boat shoe about ten years ago... Which is really it's purpose although I highly doubt anybody is using it that way. I use mine for casually cycling around... Used them more often years ago as they don't fit into an Ivy context IMO.

Re: The Question of Sneakers

The Approach was the Lava Domes big brother I think...dont know if you remember them from the time..think they came out the same year..

With the denim.cut offs you may have slightly misread the bear reference...

Re: The Question of Sneakers

Aldens are great but too expensive, for how they are made which is a shame... They look perfect, but...  Unfortuately they wouldn't fit me well either.

I meant the Camper Imar, not the classic Camper. The Imar looks exactly like the Rancourt Tennis...

Re: The Question of Sneakers

Bop, those Approaches are so cool, my pal the Nat Geo photog had 'em, and all the others ....

Hiking boots in the old style get me crazy, partially because of a passage in Trevanian's Shibumi, partly from the Eiger Sanction, partly because of Heavy Duty Judy, an outdoorsy spinner I liked in high school, who was always breaking in a new pair and wearing hiking shorts that showed off her firm muscular perfectly formed legs ....

In Cali I wear them a lot, on Gilligan's Island never, sea level is not the right terroir, but when I break nationally again and go on your I'm bringing the old Nikey hikers with me for Ventura County funz

Ha, I am not keen on Camper anymore, too... I would die for white PF Flyers, and my wife even more!

Re: The Question of Sneakers

for Bop, a sighting of Peter Cook in the '70s on some interview show, wearing high-top red Converse All-Stars and flared poplin khakis, weird rock star look

But the amazing film I saw late last night:

A Day in the Death of Donny B (1968), a black and white film produced by the National Institute of Health and shot  in Harlem, which follows young addict Donny B as he makes his harrowing rounds in the hood while dressing so very coolly ... he looks so cool actually that the message is weakened ....

He wears black high top Chuck Taylors, pale poplin G9, narrow high short Leesures, white socks, Ray-Ban Olympia type sunglasses, white socks

amazing sneaker action in this good-looking and well-intentioned piece of propaganda

Re: The Question of Sneakers

rare follow-up dept.:

wore the navy Sperry CVOs today with thickish socks, after a couple of hours' worth of breaking them in at home

no blood, no pain, all went well, thanks Ollie and Tomiskinky!

glad I kept them, let's see how long they last with moderate use

Re: The Question of Sneakers

I'm trying to find a canvas deck shoe that is pure white with the classic blue piping. The Keds Mainsails would be perfect but I see they aren't made anymore, any suggestions as to currently produced alternatives? I looked at the Vans Authentic but they are off white.

Re: The Question of Sneakers

Those are pure white, not off white. I know, I almost bought them but got another, slightly off white discontinued pair in a Sale instead:

Re: The Question of Sneakers

I'm too lazy to go back through the thread, but in case nobody has mentioned them yet, I'd recommend the canvas Sperry Top Sider Stripers. They're relatively inexpensive, so I get a new pair about every other year.
