Not ivy but a very iconic piece of clothing. i have a couple by saint james and armor lux (they are the main players) but I think I prefer the regular crew neck striped shirts, more versatile and the boat neck look can look a little effeminate and well....gay?
Not everyone's cup of tea but I think they have their place every now and agin, but they'll probably look out of place on Acton High st.
Saint James have two: The lightweight Miniquiers and the heavyweight Meridien, if they're too pricey for you try out the Russian Marine Telnyashka the quality on those are decent are decent.
Maybe wear the sleeves rolled up/buy short sleeve/tailor to shorten sleeve to avoid the mime artist look?
/\ or wear black leather motorcycle jacket, old ripped jeans, dirty white canvas sneakers and be the Ramones
... or wear only the shirt, skip the pants, underwear, shoes and socks completely, have a deep tan on a massive bald melon, go to the beach and be Picasso
which is what I'm about to do myself actually,
it takes a confident dude to wear a boatneck anything
I had a red and white Breton-type striped shirt with red ringer crewneck from Sears when I was nine ... Bean used to sell them too but I can only visualize them on preppy girls
boatneck or not I refuse to say the word "crepes"
Living with in 500 yards of the Pacific ocean, I decided to grab a few of the Saint James Meridiens last year. I love them for a casual walk on the beach with Mrs.YSR and my dog, a super frizzy pomeranian. In my opinion, wearing an "effeminate"top and walking an "effeminate" dog cancel each other out to make me look SUPER macho haha!
Im a big fan of the Saint James Breton jumpers as well. I own Matelot sweater and its built like a brick wall, super warm and thick.
Ive ordered from https://brittanyboutique.com for most of them. Great service and they are a bit cheaper for the members in the USA.
/\ 1982 was a great year for L.L. Bean, every student in the East was buying the stuff like crazy .... to the point of Total Design Concept, especially at the women's colleges ....
Marrimeko do great ones, I have a blue ad white long sleeve version.
"Each year they go on manoeuvres, To prepare for defence they are keen, Sometimes it's the Lakes of Killarney, More often the pond in the Green,The canal it could be of assistance, In defending our own holy ground, But due to proposed legislation, We'll have to sail all the way round.."
The Dubliners, The Irish Navy
There's a picture of my old man, with the rest of the crew shortly after this came out...by a pond, the captains got a model boat on a string.
Anything in a Breton stylee I STILL be down with..tend to wear more t shirt stuff these days but long sleeves saw much action in my scenes of the 80s for sure..
Sunspel & John Lewis have done some lovely bits in recent years too I'd add...
Picasso looks the mutts...
I'm wearing one of these Uniqlo jobs today;
http://www.uniqlo.com/uk/store/goods/143923
Not bad at all for £12.90! fairly heavyweight, more of a crew neck than the traditional boatneck and 3/4 striped in a marine blue rather than a navy - all features I much prefer.
I've long been inspired by this outrageous mover from the "High Numbers at the Railway Hotel" footage. Breton, khakis and desert boots - a fine look!

Mrs Bop said these were out off fashion now and she wasnt going to carry on wearing hers, I told her to shut up and put it back on!
I walk into this thread and just feel like I don't even know you guys anymore.
Are these the same thing as a Russian telnyashka?
