Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

http://encyclopediaofsurfing.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Edwards_Church.jpg

Just thought I'd kick it off with that picture of Phil Edwards. I think this is something that is increasingly starting to interest me. I know Pendletons, white levis, sperry cvos, pop-overs get discussed regularly and I know there have been some threads that touched on it, but I felt like it might deserve a thread of it's own? I don't wanna be filling the Tropical Ivy full of Surf related pictures since I feel like its for a wider, maybe smarter range of pictures.

http://encyclopediaofsurfing.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Endless_Summer_airport.jpg
Think this was in the Tropical thread at some stage

I think there was a (admitably brief) period than Ivy league clothing had a huge influence on Surfers and in turn Surfing had a huge influence on popular culture and the way people were dressing casually, so I think it is relevant to the forum. The Reyn Spooner connection is well known and they were geographically based as far in the US as you can get while selling Ivy styled clothing long before they started producing their Aloha shirts.

In addition to the obvious brands, Pendleton, Reyn Sponer, LVC, Yellow Rat Clothing are doing some decent stuff- mostly late 50s/ Early 60s repros, some of which crosses over in Ivy League clothing. Leith do some good t-shirts, as well as there usual Shetlands and Madras.

I'm interested to see any pictures anyone has, any recommended reading, blogs, films.

Fred Hemmings, the clean cut, conservative boy of Hawaiian surfing at the 68 world championships, Top 2/3 buttoned, 2 on the cuff, button down etc..

Stan, Bop, Woolster, Moose Acton... I can see you and others being able to contribute to this one, I know it won't appeal to everyone though?

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

/\  Tommy Boy this is my jam and I have got some stuff lined up for this thread if the other groms don't get there first

I love that pic of the three surfers in the airport and in fact did post it before in ye olde classic Tropical Ivy thread ....

hard to find the clothing style by searching "surfers" because surfers are mainly photographed in board shorts

but there is a cool subgenre of photos of surfers en route to breaks standing and sitting on their wagons and trucks and woodies

looking forward to this one, will kick some stuff in soon and should add that there are great '60s surf style shots from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa and the UK too

here's one with groovy trucks and shorts, surfers at Mimiwhangata Bay, Northland, NZ, 1966, with 1945 Ford and 1946 Chevrolet:

I think there was a (admitably brief) period than Ivy league clothing had a huge influence on Surfers and in turn Surfing had a huge influence on popular culture and the way people were dressing casually, so I think it is relevant to the forum.

Nick Hilton wrote about wearing wheat jeans in the early 60s, explaining some of the context for why they became popular on the East Coast:
http://www.nickhilton.com/gatsbysghostb … al-history

I bought my first pair of blue jeans at the Hill School campus store. They were white. Off-white, really. The company called them “White Levi’s.” It was printed right on the tag, though they really were a beige color. Southern kids called them Wheat Jeans. I wore them home to Rumson for Christmas vacation, and to a RHS basketball game. People – girls – asked, “Where’d you get those pants!” White Levi’s hadn’t made it to Red Bank. The experience! My first sartorial thrill, wearing something new, totally cool! An antidote for teen-age angst.

I picked up Louise Winters, my date, and her old man answered the door, Martini in one hand, Marlboro in the other; asked with a withering look, “Where’d you get those pants?” and that completely sealed it. Nasty old drunk, icon of a generation, embarrassing his daughter. His disdain was my merit badge. This guy, in his Hunter green blazer with the golf-club crest, white turtleneck and corduroy pants with the duck embroidery! If this old fogy had a problem with what I was wearing, it meant something.

My guess is that white ducks (as part of the Princeton "beer suit" tradition) paved the way for white Levi's, sort of like how dirty bucks paved the way for desert boots.

Guh. It's April but still only in the low 50's here in MA. This thread is making me want to re-watch the Endless Summer series (2 being my favorite) on a loop while under a pile of blankets so I can pretend like it's July. I suppose I can throw driveway gravel around the house and imagine it's sand as well?

As much as I'm trying to find some way in, I just can't cope with those dweebs in the Casben ad.  WTF?

You're right.  When I look at their faces I can just hear the thick Russian accents.
