Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

I can report that YR has been easy. Friendly, responsive, and prompt. Received a nice email message today about being "jazzed" to tell me my order is on its way. I like this place. I'm not sure everything they sell is my style or would fit, but I like their vibe.

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

So, how ivy is flip flops? I think that I was the only one wearing shoes in the Philippines and it made me think; what did they wear to the beach in the 60s?

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

Good question, Sancho. I believe I've seen historical photos of surfer dudes in flip flops, and when I was a little kid in the '60s, we wore simple rubbery flip flops to the pool. Does that make them surfer ivy? Swimming pool ivy?

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

I'll buy that.

Somewhat relatedly... in the summer of 1976, there was an explosion of rainbow-like sandals all over campus. They had thick soles made of colored layers, and you could find expensive ones and cheap ones, depending on where you shopped. I bought a couple of pair from K-Mart dirt cheap and wore them all summer with jeans and swim trunks whenever I wasn't working (which was not often back then). They were very trendy but very cool.

Ha ha. Dirtbag/stoner/surfer probably fits for me and my college buddies back then. Although the surfer part was more wanna be than reality, in Iowa.

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

Sancho, in any case, whether they're ivy, surf, dirt-bag, or stoner, I'd suggest flip flops represent one's best warm-weather no-socks option.

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

@Stan and Sancho, context is everything, as they say. I think flip flops are great for the beach and the pool. My problem is I can't walk very well for very far in them. They hurt my toes and I can't keep them on without gripping them with my feet. I also am highly phobic about the vulnerability of toes and feet in an urban environment, i.e., a piano or something could drop on them.

Cons, CVOs, boat shoes, etc., -- I can't do no socks partly because of aesthetics but also because it stinks 'em up.

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

Stan, my last pair which lasted a good 5, 6 years were navy so I switched and got royal blue this time. Do you know anything about the Sundeks? Another Ca. company, I considered trying a pair but the rise looks way low. My Birdwells have an 11 1/2 inch rise on size 30.

I tried a pair of these J Crews but I'm going to return them. Nice retro look but the rise is a little low.     https://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/swim/65tabswimshorts/PRDOVR~A0701/A0701.jsp

I need something like that, that  can double as shorts when I need to stop at the store on the way to the beach. The shorter 301s are good at the beach but I don't want to walk around the store looking like Magnum PI

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

Good point, Stan. I've been a swimmer since I was about 8, including competitively in jr high and high school. I learned very early on how painful a foot sunburn can be.

YR tees arrived. I'd give more than two thumbs up if I had more thumbs.

Re: Surf Ivy/ The west coast look

/\  which t-shirts did you get, the "YR" logo ones?  glad to hear the experience was good for you, Yellow Rat has some fans here, I have always liked his stuff though I haven't bought yet, not because I don't want to, mind you, but because I'm very cheap ........
