Re: 501s???

I wear 501s all the time, including with my Rancourt moccasins and Bean boots. I say go for it- the jeans are pretty cheap so you won't be ruined if it's not exactly the look you want.

Re: 501s???

Yeah… I am big fan. You want "One Wash". You want to go 1 inch up from your waist size.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Levis-Mens-Original-Jeans-Onewash/dp/B001QOL1W0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446820021&sr=8-1&keywords=levis+501+one+wash

Some good pics of the colour here.

But i think if you go with a lighter colour you'll get annoyed and want to hem and taper them. Lighter colours just look "baggier" around the ankle. I get mine tapered to 7.5 which is plenty to over my Bean boots, etc.

Re: 501s???

I hate my 501s. They're too tight in the thighs and crotch and the rise sucks. I'm back with Wranglers exclusively until someone can point me in the direction of another pair of quality made ethically produced tough wearing denim with substantial 12" plus rise (size 32/33).

Re: 501s???

^ I'm with Oli on this, avoid 501's unless you're going for a specific style by LVC.
The quality and fit can be a bit variable on the regular Levis range (weird as the iconic 501 should be well 'iconic'), I've two pair in the same size and finish (one wash like CB)  bought a year apart (2012 and 13)  and they are completely different fit.

Those Wranglers on the other jeans thread are a great budget option,
but if you want to spend a little more it's worth giving the Edwin Nashville's a go ( sanforised denim so no real shrinkage- so you can buy in your own size  and nice heavy fabric) with a 12" rise on the 32W.

Re: 501s???

I don't even remember if I went LVC or not. I walked into the San Francisco Levi's shop in Union Square sometime last fall and a salesman pulled something off the racks based on the fit of a pair of cotton twills that I was wearing at the time; they were a natural waist straight cut and my 501s are neither. I was looking at Sugar Canes in some trendy Mission boutique last week and they're even worse fit wise, with a lower rise. I'll look into the Edwin Nashville model though I'd prefer a zip fly. I'm admittedly fine with my cheap Wranglers so long as I can get past the square looking dye and fade them out a bit. I tortured myself on a hike in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park last weekend, showering them in sweat and then dusting a thick layer of dirt all over which I've yet to shake off. I'm gonna try the denim nerd thing and not wash them for a couple of months, hoping that some rough wear gives them better character. They'd really be the perfect jeans if only they used a darker wash.

Re: 501s???

I own three pairs of Levi's that I purchased used. I imagine they're all around 10 years old. Have one pair of "Shrink to Fit" 501s that I purchased new this year, and the fit is pretty much the same.

I have looked at Wranglers before, but they look too "Cowboy" to me. I tend to wear (khaki colored) jeans with jackets a lot and the 501s seem a little better suited for that purpose.

I'm sure I'll talk myself into trying Wranglers at some point though, but I hear their colored jeans are different than the indigo.

Wow Ollie...I got nowhere NEAR Third Base with Julia....

Thee Captain's in a bit of a strop here now...

My 30s Lee's from yesterday are navel huggers...but maybe a tad wide for tastes here...

I just wish I'd got more '27 501s back in the day....lovely denim so they woz/iz....

Guess I'm lucky at least...I've no problems with my jeans.....

Re: 501s???

I also find the Wranglers a bit too cowboy but with so many respected posters giving them a thumps up I am thinking of buying a pair. I have never liked the W on the back pockets and back in the day we used to laugh at the kids wearing cheaper Wranglers compared to our 501's and Lee Jeans. I haven't been able to buy good fitting jeans for some time and I am in shape.

Re: 501s???

If I could find just one model of trousers or jeans that has a good rise and a slight taper that fits me well, I would stuff my closet with them. Even if it meant I only had one style of trouser in my wardrobe.

My 501s fit better than anything else I own, including both jeans and proper trousers. I'd like a higher rise for cosmetic reasons but the rise isn't uncomfortable. Definitely not a "low rise" either.

Re: 501s???

I go 1 inch up in the waist size to give a slight higher rise and a more comfortable thigh fit. I taper them and hem them for clean versatile look. The One Wash fade beautifully too. I pick them up cheap from the US and think they're great value as a result.

There's no facking way I would pay £70 on regent street for them.

Having a few on the go at the same time, at different stages of fade is also great. You get a nice spectrum of blues.
And the fact that a cheap denim, that works for me, exists in many colours is a great boon.

501s are rated highly by the the Japanese firm stocked in John Simons who have done a straight copy but to a higher spec...for £175 wink

Wranglers have the thicker seem on the outside which makes less versatile, less suitable for sportcoat and denim, which I wear a lot.

Also, Levi's have a romance about them. Which Wrangler do not.

Re: 501s???

I haven't had any problems with my regular old 501s, never had any LVC jeans, still sticking with my plain old 501s, you know I have lots of love for the rodeo clowns in the Wrangler Brigade here, but I feel more comfortable in the 501s .....

not to mention that the color of the Wranglers even when unwashed is not completely to my liking .....

also: the Wranglers actually injured me

re standard 501s, I'll repeat what I wrote in the Wrangler Beater jeans thread, which is: try to find the Mexican 501s, I think I like them more than the Egyptian ones ......

Re: 501s???

Seriously, if it wasn't for the '80s and maybe the '90s, I don't think the Wranglers would have the cowboy stigma.  Ok, so forget the fact that they're called "cowboy cut" and have a picture of a guy roping a steer on the paper label....
